Rs250 blown up

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Jaime Rawson, Feb 17, 2018.

  1. Hi guys,

First post I've only recentre signed up unfortunately not a good one to start off with.

Desperate need of help. I was driving home on the motorway today on cruise control, when I heard a bang like I ran over somethsom big ( i didn't) the engine failure light came on and i pulled over on the hard shoulder. The car was grinding it seemed. As I got out there was oil everywhere. It seems like its mostly from the drivers side but can't really see. Has this happened to anyone or does anyone have an idea what it could be? I'm guessing the RS is dead but really hope not.

    Thanks guys

  2. Bang, grinding, oil... Doesn't sound too good...

  3. That sounds like a classic 'bye bye piston/rod' and has probably put a hole in some part of the block or sump. Be keeping an eye out for a 2nd hand engine just in case.

    Nightmare.... :coldsweat:

Any background on the car? Have you had it a while? Any mods, particularly a remap?

  4. You would need to get it looked at, else we are all just 2nd guessing. As already said it does not sound at all good :worried:

  5. Hi guys yeah thats what imI thinking. I've just had it taken to a garage to be looked at officially. Only had it 5 month, no mods, full service history

  6. It's pretty rare for the F4R to let go, especially un-modded and serviced properly. It might not be as bad as all that, fingers crossed mate.

  7. Yeah that's one of the reasons i got was reliability. I wouldn't mind if i was thrashing it but I was doing 70mph on cruise 300 miles away from home when it went bang

  8. Same happened to me a while ago, snapped a rod which blew a hole in the engine. Had done around 70k km, still not sure what caused it. Car was remapped before i got it mapped but could have been anything.

  9. Do you know for sure it hasnt been re-mapped.?

  10. No mate I dont know for sure but it doesnt feel like it has, it only just pulls away from my mates gti whats 220bhp.
And Djauweh good to know im not the only one, did you get an engine replacement?

Mine also had a problem with a big end bearing and that could have easily thrown the rod through the block, i was at Thruxton down the back straight giving it some, i use an oil treatment and i think that is what saved the rod not going through the block, did drive it from there to Stonehenge before it got to bad to drive.
Thought it was because the engine i bought came from a crashed car and the sump got smashed, so i put that down to it loosing the oil before the engine was shut down, maybe not now as there have been a couple of others.

  12. So not you wringing it’s neck then Ian?

No, not me, thats what the limiter is for

    isn't it :sunglasses:

  14. Any pre warnings, excessive oil consumption ect? What’s the mileage? I’ve always though the MK3 lump was a fairly solid lump.
Hopefully it’s not as bad as it sounds.

No, it was running like a dream, just heard a slight rumbling, pushed the clutch down and coasted into the pits :pensive:

  16. Sorry mate I was replying to the OP. Read your thread. Good read

    Sorry :sob:

    and thanks :sunglasses:

  18. Sorry for the late reply, it running really well no excessive oil consumption, i check it monthly. No noises or anything in fact my wife and i thought it was running even smoother during our long trip. Should get the cause today hopefully so fingers crossed. I had my timing belt done at Xmas too so I'm hoping it was caused by the timing belt.

  19. Timing belt, water pump everything done. Also out of interest as I'm considering all options. How much do you guys think I could sell it for if all else fails

  20. Be very interested to know whats failed on your engine.let us know

  21. I will do mate, should find out today or tomorrow.

  22. Who did the cambelt?

  23. DDC Renault specialist in Doncaster, rated really well

  24. Yeah they are.

  25. Nothing to do with timing belt. One of the rods came lose causing big inner damage and 2 holes in the block

  26. ohh..fk...bad luck mate..

  27. How many miles had u done in ure 250 ?

  28. Its got 72 on the clock mate. Been quoted £3395 so far what do you guys think

  29. Its making me wana check my big end bolts man.so bloody awful whats happened to you i really feel for you.new engine may be a cheaper option tbh dude.

  30. Thanks mate, still getting quotes the mechanic said it came lose over time and finally went so yeah get it checked mate.

Is it, was it, number 2 rod (from the flywheel end) ???

  32. Ouch! Replacement engines come up for around £1500-£1800.There was a guy on FB selling one a while back, I may still have his details. You could try him?

  33. surely Renault should pick up the bill as it is surely been assembled wrong and not torqued properly at the factory.
I would defo ask them to contribute

  34. Many people forget that in the UK any product sold has to be free of defect under the Sales of Goods Act. So long as you can prove that it's a manufacturing issue and not caused by wear and tear.

  35. Still waiting on the report. Been in touch with the garage I bought it from and they are not playing ball. Renault said £6k and no garage will touch it. Even RS Tuning and DDC Doncaster.

  36. For less money you can buy a used engine and just drop it in. It will still cost less if you do all the maintenance and get it forged. Been there myself.

  37. That's what im going to I think with a friend. Off to buy a 225 today for £2k as I need a car for and I'll probably track it once the 250 is back up and running
