With the warning of snow hitting the UK by the weekend, just wondering what tyres people are using with impending snowy conditions? I have Pirelli Pzeros on my R26, which I I know are a summer performance tyre. Reading some online forums, some are saying these tyres provide little or no grip in ice/snow. Has anyone got experience of running these tyres ice/snow? Should I consider winter tyres? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
It depends where you are, what the topography is where you are, if you must take the car or can leave it home, your attitude to risk, etc...
Live in Suffolk. So hopefully not going to be hit as hard as the perhaps northern regions of Scotland Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Summer tyres don't really work under 8 degrees as the rubber freezes up. Winter tyres work at a lot lower temperatures and work in all conditions. People seem to think that they are only for Snow/Ice Chances are you will probably be fine but i know mine is a LOT better through the winter months on Conti winter tyres and even in the dry they offer a large amount of grip, granted they are a bit soft and jelly like but they still hang on.
I always had winter tyres on my daily drivers. So one set of winter wheels that I swap on when weather gets colder (I personally do it when it's continuously below 10). Winter tyres work so much better in colder temps and wet weather. Includes min 1 trip into the Alps a year.
Yep, AD08R's for summer and Conti TS850ps for the winter. Im still on the Yoko's mind you, The weather has been fairly mild this winter so far and hasnt really made me want to put the winters but there is still time
If water only freezes at 0 C then I doubt rubber will be affected at 8 C. IME, the threshold is about 2 or 3 C. Summer compound don't seem to fall of a cliff under 7C, they just gradually start being sub optimal. Big fan of winters though but like you I am still on semis...
Rubber reacts differently to different temperatures. All weather and winter tires are made to be stickier at lower temperatures. They would wear out after 2 laps on a track but see you right for a 1000 miles of hard winter work. Don't be fooled into thinking that winter tires are for Jeeps and Landrovers and don't be fooled that your p zeros work well in the snow! Speaking from experience, all weather and winter rubber is a HUGE step up if you live in an area that may get hit by snow, ice or even slush. Passing Range rovers in my Polo on All weather tires, ranks as one of the highlights of my snow memories. Do some reading????
I use Avon ice touring on mine. Winters going on tomorrow as it's been pretty mild this winter. Driving to Wales last week on summer tyres was a bit hairy at 4am with very little grip
Already read my P Zeros are not good for winter as I originally stated, elsewhere on other forums. Just gauging opinion on here, to see how Leary they could be in the really bad winter conditions. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In proper winter conditions the P Zeros will be as useless as any other summer oriented tyre. If you live in an area with occasional snow/ice, I'd definitely get a set of dedicated winter rubber.
I'm running winter tyres (Nokian WR D4) for the first time this winter in 22 years of North East Scotland driving. In my preceding 21 years of varying winters I've never had a problem getting where I needed to, although when I had my Clio V6's I'd tend not to use them in the winter too much......... I only bought the winters as the Megane came with Cup 2's. Winter tyres work in snow/ice definitely. The last two days has shown that. I'm not buying into their value in lower temperatures over regular (or summer) tyres though. On average this winter, so far, I'd have been better off with normal tyres, I've felt the winters struggling more than I've ever felt I have been through the winter months with non-winter tyres. Perhaps that's down to the mild nature of this winter, which is a trend over the last few years. I don't think there is worth in having winter tyres in the U.K., unless our winters are going to get drastically worse. Yes they have been great the last two days, but would I have struggled if I hadn't had winters, no. Adjustment to driving style is a much better way to handle winter driving.
It totally depends on circumstances and need for mobility. My 6.00am 60miles commute through Sussex country lanes demanded winters (Nokian D4s too) in the M135i for convenience and to keep a decent safety margin at decent speed. I could have had the same margin with the Supersports at much lower speed but not for me.
