White smoke

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Sean, Dec 14, 2017.

  1. Hi I've had my renault megane 225 for about 6 months now
The latest problem I'm having is there's white smoke coming from the exhaust,it's not losing water or oil and it smokes whether the engine is hot or cold
Has anybody else had this problem?

  2. White smoke would indicate oil burning so.........

    Valve stem seals
    Turbo seals
    Piston seals (ie rings)

Turbo would be where i wud personally start the search

  3. The car flashed up check injection yesterday but it was very cold and it' only did it that once, could it be faulty injectors?

  4. Check injection is a fault that comes up for a vast array of things not just injectors playing up. U need to do a diagnostic via obd

  5. Ive just booked it in for a diagnostic check later,I've tried a couple of cheap diagnostic machines as my airbag light is on and it doesnt show any fault codes for the airbag so I'll see what this machine picks up

  6. White smoke is generally water related, if it's oil related it'll be blue smoke.

  7. I don' know if this makes any difference but the smoke is mainly from the right exhaust and if you put your hand close to the right exhaust tail pipe it' hot air you can feel and the left tail pipe it' cool air you can feel

  8. burning water somewhere. Head gasket. White smoke isn't oil

  9. Had turbo seals fail on few of my starlets and was always white smoke and i have put below a vid on youtube as i wanted to check and every vid i looked up "turbo oil seal fail" where all white smoke.heres an extreme example

  10. And yeah i agree it can also be water burning off also yes.

  11. My engine management light is not on but here is what the diagnostic showed

Df239 fixed that, that was the rear seatbelt dodgy connection so my airbag light is now off
    Df623 closing brake signal
    Df101 multiplex esp connection
    Df066 no injection multiplex signal
Df194 invalid power steering multiplex signal
    Df152 multiplex network error
    Df017 tachograph index programming

Could any of them be causing white smoke if not I'll see what it fails on on saturday

  12. White smoke is indicative of water or hot oil, blue smoke tends to be cooler oil.

However, if it isn’t losing coolant or burning oil, I wouldn’t worry about it - it could be excess condensation in the exhaust being evaporated off. If the coolant or oil levels start dropping or show signs that they have mixed, start investigating then!

  13. Check your oil. If it has any white in it that indicates water.

  14. The water level is not dropping neither is the oil and there is no creamy milky colour under the oil cap.
Its like when you start a car on a cold day and you see a light coloured smoke until the car heats up,my cars like that hot or cold
Anyway I've just put the car in for an m.o.t and it passed.....the emissions that is failed on other stuff
I'll see if it gets any worse and obviously keep an eye on the water oil side of things

  15. Where abouts u based dude ?

  16. Glasgow I really should go to the newbie section to say I've joined

  17. I saw a white r26/r26r?)and whilst mines was smoking away his was fine and it was -2c, so even although mines has passed the emissions obviously something is wrong
It' weird that its passed the emissions but obviously something is wrong
Think I might take it to an engine specialist or can any mechanic do tests to see whats wrong testing fluids etc?

  18. I know I've wrote its passed the emissions twice (in the same post)but it will not let me change it neither does predictive text work properly it keeps trying to put in these stupid things ('''''')

  19. When you say the car is hot, how long has it been driven for?

If it isn’t losing coolant or oil, the only thing that could cause it is combustion gases, or sound deadening material in your exhaust burning, but that would be highly unlikely!

  20. The most I've went in a consecutive run is about an hour or 2 and it still smokes
Ive managed to find a photo of it before i bought it and there seems to be slight smoke coming from the right tail pipe but not as bad now
I can take a video or picture and post it sundat/Monday if that would be better

  21. Would be interesting to see how much you're actually getting, as after an hour or two of driving, the engine and exhaust would be completely up to temperature. Do you run a decat? Decatted exhaust won't run as hot as one with a cat, so there's a possibility that you're just seeing normal combustion vapour?

Otherwise, my gut feeling would be that it is burning oil or coolant, but it's just not at a rate where you've noticed the levels changing yet.

Post up a pic or video so we can get an idea of how much you're seeing.

  22. Hi thanks for your help but my car failed it's m.o.t on saturday mostly on the suspension and an original quote of 200 has turned into 800 to repair it
Ive taken it else where to see if it can be repaired cheaper and if not Ive no option but to strip it and sell it for parts

  23. What else is wrong with the car? How does a £800 repair bill work out so expensive it's better to strip it? Don't really see that myself

  24. My car in good condition is worth up to 3500 but
800 to pass the m.o.t,some other faults both Windows sticky, passenger footwear has become wet recently, comes up with check injection, white smoke plus what ever the advisories were after the car went in for the m.o.t (the failed m.o.t slip is in the car in a garage so I'm unable to say what they are at the moment)cars still on original clutch so will probably be next on the list to go,in my opinion the car is not economical to repair at 800 and in the last 6 months I've spent over 1000
The car is no longer any fun

  25. All the problems you've listed are common to these cars, and well-documented on how to repair. Some basic tools and you could sort yourself. It can be disheartening, but satisfying as you work through, and fix things. Shame to break it given what you've said.

If you do choose to get rid, may I suggest you avoid ageing performance cars in future - they are always going to require a certain amount of money thrown at them, as generally the parts and technology are more complex and expensive than your everyday road car!

  26. Your probably right I should avoid aging renaults,I've had a mazda rx7 turbo a couple of years ago which had its problems but this renault is in a different league for going wrong
I think I'll work a bit harder and do more overtime this year coming and get an audi s3 or golf gti

  27. I am on my 5th renault and no problem with any of them, luck of draw

  28. if you cant afford to get it fixed fair enough but as others have said the bills dont seem that bad, its a car thats 10+ years old? these things happen on 10+ year old cars, you dont want problems? buy a new car on PCP.
My previous car was a 120d e82, it was 5 years old and had done 75k and within 3 months the turbo let go, then the egr, then the timing chain started to stretch leading to a bill of £2,500 luckily i was able to flog it on to some other chump. so no its not just a aging renault thing at all, the problem with second hand is that you have no idea what kind of ape has driven the car and how they have driven it, service stamps only tell half the story if they are revving the nuts off it from cold etc. etc.
my advice would be to buy a car with someone who knows what they are doing, hell im sure you could slip your local grease monkey £50 and they would come check a car over for you before buying it, personally if a car was smoking at cold i would be wanting to take it on a nice long drive to get it hot and check it again before buying, if the seller says no walk away. But then again its so easy to play capt. Hindsight and as ive said above ive bought a Dog recently from a company seen as manufacturing reliable and wellbuilt cars.
