R26 Which upgrade next

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Nunez20, Mar 3, 2016.

  1. Hi

i currently have a r26 that has a stage 1 on getting 255 bhp, looking to get to around 280 bhp what's the most efficient way of doing this?

plans are to do a back box chop and get a short shifter but what engine mods?

    250 turbo and 630 injectors?
    Decat?
new inter cooler and a stage 2?

just don't want to spend money for no real benefit so just wondering what people find the best way is, in hindsight should have done these before the stage 1

  2. You can get new 630cc injectors and decent exhaust (decat and system) and get 280bhp without upgrading your intercooler or turbo

  3. Ill do ic cause u would sufer overheating

Surely a 250 turbo and a tweak is cheaper than all of that?

  5. For me a decat and map tweak spending £250-£350 odd quid fitted is probably the most cost effective way of real gains.

  6. Airbox mod, mid box chop and decat got me 275/275

  7. thanks for the replies, my issue with a decat is finding someone that will pass it on the MOT. Will give RS tuning a ring and see what they recommend. I would be happy with 275/275

  8. But how hot is the AIT going to be with no intercooler? Not something I'd like to run long term tbh! It probably made 280 on the first dyno run but not on any run after!

  9. Intercooler and a stage 2 should see around that tbh, if you go 630 injectors and 250 turbo + exhaust you should be looking at 300/ 300.
Most cost effective way is stage 2 and intercooler.
If you want a bit of safety headroom on the injectors get the 630's
I personally wouldn't feel comfortable with circa 280bhp on the standard injectors - especially with how temperamental they seem to be

  10. I've been thinking about full exhaust from Ktec with sports cat with Airtek intercooler with 630 injectors plus RStunig remap what would I get roughly with that ? I know catless would be better but I have hassle every time I MOT the Audi as tat has no cats ! Originally came with 4 cats hence why you get such easy power gains from m just changing the exhaust !

  11. 281/298 capped, thats what mine is runing, same setup

  12. Sounds good to me ! I better start saving ! Couldn't take us for a spin ? See how much different it is compared to mine ?

  13. If u come around my place, no problem

  14. Have you got an upgraded clutch ? How much can the standard clutch handle ?

  15. Cool sounds like a plan.

  16. R26.r cluth and flywheel, as far as i know it should handle it

    You're in a yellow 26 aren't you?

  19. Yes, thats me

  20. R clutch are meant to be good for 360lbft with heavy use, so your into being forged on that kind of poke!

  21. Where is the best place to get the 630 injextors and a intercooler?

A full exhaust system seems like a lot of money for what I gather not huge gains.

Does a stage 2 just put more stress on the engine rather than keeping at stage 1 and upgrading engine parts instead?

  22. I can get you 630s for 180-185 delivered
And I would go for the GPI cooler for around 150 off eBay, great value and gives good consistent temps on the dyno even after plenty of heavy runs.

You will find that you will be limited to around 280-285 ish on the standard exhaust they start to get restrictive after that, you will find that you can run less boost on a 3" but still get the same power and more torque.

The is no point upgrading engine components on a stage 1 because your not really going to be getting near the failure point, only once your fitting 630s, intercooler, decat etc will you be getting the torque required to bend the rods.

But........! Every engine is different and some have let go below the recognised safe 300lbft of torque some have run higher and are still fine.

It's all down to how far you want to go and how deep your pockets are!

  23. Thanks for the reply, pockets are very shallow!!! Just after around 280 bhp and 290 torque, whilst spending as little as possible!!!!

There is a 3" cat back exhaust in the sale section which would save money on something new

Want something that will be safe really don't want to get to close to the limits as its my daily drive and I do about 12k miles a year and the clutch will prob need doing within a year as will the back discs.

Just ordered a front suspension refresh parts as some have play so that's not helped the funds

Would doing a mid box chop help much? Would it work with either no cat or a sports cat and a mid box out rather than an entire system

  24. Sorry for the slow reply mate, I would personally go for, cooler, 630s and a decat, you should see a ninimum of 270+bhp and 300lbft.
And for future mods I would go for a 250 turbo and exhaust, the difference on the 250 turbo is huge, it pulls so much harder.
A friends meg made 284/300 on a standard turbo on a stage 2 with standard exhaust, fitted a 250 turbo and it made 288/300 but the difference was huge, I was similar power at the time and it was quite a bit quicker than mine on the standard turbo.
The exhaust was holding him back, fitted a ktec 3" exhaust but without having it mapped it made 288bhp and 347lbft!!!
So he went for a map tweak to bring the torque down and it made 307/300 on less boost.
So goes to show how getting an exhaust makes the difference!

  25. Did not think an exhaust would make such a difference. Would those cheaper IC be good compared to the forge ones?

Been looking for a 250 turbo but can't find many prices the only one I have seem was £400 not sure if that is a good price or not. Is the 250 a straight bolt in replacement?

Thanks for all the advice btw

  26. The GPI intercooler is spot on mate, I have a forge on mine and my mate who I was talking about above has the GPI, and his preformed just as well as mine on the dyno, we were both only really seeing 5 degrees max above ambient.

You can just fit the cold side of the 250 turbo (compressor) onto the hot side of the 225/230 turbo (turbine)
The hot side on the 250 and the 225/230 turbos are identical it's just the cold side on the 250 that's bigger.

    The 250 is a 15t
    The 225/230 is a 14t

It can work out cheaper doing it this way, Andy bond was selling the cold side for 320 recently.

But 400 quid for a full turbo is not a bad price.

It's a straightforward replacement, it's just a V band clamp, oil feed and oil return that needs to come off iirc, you can change it in a few hours if it's your first time, probably an hour if you have done it before.

    And don't mention it mate.

Remind me where i can get one of those coolers again?

  28. just search ebay for GPI intercooler and the first one is for a megane

  29. Yeah I'm tempted myself to fit a 250 cold side, the standard blower seems to run out of puff up the top now it's running 287/312

  30. dont really want to decat it for MOT etc, might try go down the 250 turbo, 630 and IC route with the airbox mod and mid box chop and see how that pans out. Might cost more than I want to spend tho

  31. Guys has anyone actually dyno'd the airbox mod or the itg intake? And I'm not talking about itg themselves or ktech who are selling the stuff

  32. There was dyno comparisons of the air box mod years ago by RSTuning, was on the old site. From memory the air box mod was better than swapping for a cone filter due to under bonnet temps, unless you relocated the cone with the full ITG kit. This is my recollection mind you, so take with a long of salt
