Which tires: AD08r or A052 or RS3?

  1. Hi there!

I am looking to buy R/T tires as going to focus more on track days and my PS2 are not so good for the duty and are already quite torn up.

So I choose between those 3 options - Yokohama AD08r or A052 (new one, not sure anyone tried), Hankook RS3.

The thing is that the Yoko are 1.4-1.5 times more expensive than Hankook. Given all 3 are quite identical in terms of dry grip and their working termal range the choice is straight forward - the RS3.

But two opinions I heard bother me:
    1. Yokos last significantly longer (despite heaving the same 200 treadwear index) up to two times - is that possible? Does it correlate with reality?
    2. The RS3 losses much of its' grip levels once has noticible wear like 50%.

Is there any truth behind it? Or I sholud not bother myself and just buy the cheaper ones?

what do you want to use the car for?

The AD08R is hard to beat as a do all tyre tbh, If you want something more track focused then id look at the A052, New to the market but meant to be the successor to the great A048R which is a proper race tyre.

  3. Interesting thread...I have just finished off some a048r tyres and today had those wheels fitted with some r888r tyres
    A052 are £254
    R888r are 153
Would be interested if people think the price difference is worth it.

  4. Road and track, I am really tired of PS2 - its awesome street tire but just boring and fragile for proper track use.

Funny thing the A052 is almost like AD08R due to EU eco regulations, it is not on par with A048 at all. A friend of mine who works for Yakohama says its better, but from what I have heard and the track test vedeo says they are almost the same in term of speed. AD08R has more tread material also (6.8mm vs 5.0mm).

And the thing is we will not see true semislicks like A048 which are road legal any time soon.

Between those two the Yoko should be clear winner - 888 are prone to be super soft, everheat and degrade pretty fast, at least the general opinion is like that. They are nice for rally-sprint / autocross / slalom, but not for many laps on a proper race track. At least on a heavy car like the RS.

I must add that for the Yokos I can get a good price, otherwise I would not bother and just take the RS3 - the most popular tire over here among enthusiasts.

If the Hankook RS3 performs like the Hankook RS2 that I used then it will be very poor in wet compared to AD08R. I use the AD08R on my R26 which I use daily and it's hard to beat in terms of all round performance.

Agreed, I had RS2 on my 944 many years ago. Utter rubbish tyre, dangerous in the wet and unfortunately they loose a massive amount of performance through heat cycles. When I took them off I had a set of old Yoko AVS road tyres that had been sat in my garage on to run the car around and found they had more grip than 2/3 worn RS2!

I also have ADO8R on my R26, really impressed thus far but haven't taken these tyres on track yet.

Should say though OP our climate is very different to you guys, we have had rain on probably half the days or more the last month but our temperatures are usually between 10 and 20 degrees C (more extremes further inland and lower further north). Very few weeks of the year well over 20 and down where I am only maybe 5 or 6 weeks when the temps are under 5 C, here in Dorset I haven't seen the snow stick on the ground for the past 2 or 3 years, which is a little sad for the kids as I remember going down the hills on the snow a lot when I was a kid. I could happily drive on AD08R all year round. Typical British day is much like today, its about 15 degrees C outside, occasional sun, bit of cloud and it might rain this afternoon for an hour or two.

  8. As far as I know they are totally different and RS3 is quite good on the wet. It is not a big deal anyway as I need dry track oriented tire. I can live with poor wet perfomance on road. Besides I I'll probably get new rims and have 2d sets of wheels (PS4 for road, and a track one).

Input from people who has tried both - RS3 and AD08r are welcome :grinning:

What bothers me in some reviews - the RS3 dont go good throu heat cycles. If that is true not much sense in it even given the price difference.

AD08R maybe more expensive but it holds up really well to a 25 minute track session on a hot day.

  10. I often stay out for well over an hour......or until the fuel light starts to show low. I know I shouldn't stay out so long but can't help myself haha
