250 Where Is This Leak Coming From?

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Timmay, Jun 5, 2016.

  1. Hi guys,

I have a slight leak coming from the gear box area of my Megane 250, from the inside of the white plastic collar in the photo.

Can anyone please confirm what part this is leaking from and what part needs to be replaced? Is this a common fault and any idea on roughly how much it is to fix? Is it a job that can be done on your driveway on ramps?

    Thanks in advance!

  2. The diff seal, that white casing should be have been moved back and broken off. That's a guide to fit the shaft when seal is relplaced.

  3. Ok thanks, Cockers. Is this something that can realistically be done at home on ramps or is it more a professional job?

  4. I would put it on Ramos and remove the white plastic part first, clean it up, and retest it.
Seen a few like this with that on and just removed them and been perectky fine after.
If still leaks, driveshaft will have to be pulled out and new seal fitted.

  5. Thanks, Cockers. I will get it on ramps and remove this plastic guide. So, am I right in thinking, this plastic guide could be the cause of the leak?

  6. On my car, both side seals are leaking also, but without that plastic part there. Going to sort it out this week.

  7. Are you replacing just the seals or the bearings as well? You taking it somewhere to get it done or tackling it yourself?

  8. Its going to be just the seals, both sides. Im taking it somewhere to get it done as they told me its a PITA to do. Both side seals costed 72eur with the discount, mega money for just 2x rubber seal :O

  9. They've never fixed this issue I don't think, with the mk3.

Mine was in recently for new seals under warranty, 15 months old, 12k miles.

  10. By the sounds of it, the seals will go again in that case. I'm guessing Renault haven't upgraded the seals at all. Mine is just out of warranty now, unfortunately.

    Thanks for the info, guys!

  11. Apart from a visual inspection to see a leak, what would be the symptoms if a Meg had this leak?

  12. As long as it's not leaking enough to let the level drop too low, you'd never notice. You may see a mark over where you park it.

A tiny drip of oil will look like a lot of oil when it's sprayed all over the bottom of the car. You'd be surprised how many cars have oil leaks.

A friend recently had a Volvo XC90 minor leak repaired at an indy - £700 - buys a lot of oil that.
