What is this noise.........

  1. Hi Everyone,

I had a bit of an issue a few weeks back where one of my spark plugs stripped its threads in the engine block, it has now be fixed and retapped successfully- the car seems to be running good.
Before that happened a few weeks back, I noticed a noise , like a whirring or whining when the car was over 45mph. After I had the sparkplug incident I thought that was want had been causing it .

However on driving today after picking up the car, it still makes this very noticeable disconcerting noise after 45mph on the motorway, it is totally fine at town speeds.

I have uploaded here, may need to turn the sound up...

I will add that the car is due a belt change in May , just wondering if this could be a sign that the belt is on its way out- any ideas?

  2. Can't really hear much from the video to be honest, from the description is does sound the the input shaft/diff bearings on the gearbox - common on the later 265/275 cars.

When my old 275 did it you could hear the whining/wirring noise only at higher speed, but not necessarily with acceleration. So for example if you were on the motorway going downhill and put the clutch in, you will still hear it. It's to do with wheel speed and not engine speed.

If you jack a front wheel up and spin the wheel it should spin freely with no noise, if you getting quite a loud clicking noise then that will be the issue.

  3. Yeah that sounds like mine , it isn't the acceleration that causes it , it's probably worse downhill infact .anywhere between 45 onwards

I've found a few threads and I take it it's a gearbox refurb job ?

Honestly had the worse luck with this car over the past month

  4. Sorry to hear that mate! Sometimes it's the case with these things!

Yeah it would be a gearbox refurb unfortunately - It's the input shaft bearings usually, most specialists will strip, replace any parts needed and build back up.

To give you an idea I paid £320 for the gearbox refurb and then £300 ish labour to remove/refit.

It becomes expensive because whilst the gearbox is out, it's worth weighing up if you should do the clutch/flywheel whilst the gearbox is off, mine was only on 34k miles so I left the clutch etc, but if your mileage is fairly high I'd be thinking about it to save another £300+ labour in the long run.
