Wannabe GT220

  1. Newbie - GT220

    Hi there!

May I start sending an apologize if I don't fully qualify as a complete RSMegane tenant. Being the only car in the family, some daily concerns required to expand the practicality to 5-doors while detune the expectations to 220 PS. Still running the same powerplant hardware as all other RSMegane MK3s - if I got it correctly. This is one main reason to register here, mechanical commonality. Being in Germany, the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the car  At least motorways have the correct speed limit.

Truth said, I don't even have the car - yet. I went to test drive one last the weekend, liked it and signaled it immediately. This week the car will undergo HU (MoT) and I expect to collect it sometime next week.

My car CV doesn't include anything particularly hot. Started with an Opel Ascona/Vauhall Cavalier in the 90s, my fastest car was a V6 Calibra (damn fast!) and the new GT220 will replace an MK1 Mazda3 2.0i which I would keep if I could only had two cars. I never owned a turbocharged car before. And this is my first Renault - excluded the family Renault5 I used to drive occasionally as a kid with a fresh driving license. Yes, some decades ago...

I will try to learn a bit more about these cars and some fundamentals about 'our' F4RT engine. I must say, not a lot of info I found out there. I hope this turbocharged journey lasts for a while.

    Cheers!

    Hi and welcome

I think the turbo is a smaller version than RS mk3 one, so there's your first upgrade :laughing:
Tutuur on here has a GT220 estate running a lot of power with a few choice mods

  3. The GT220 is an identical engine to the RS. No difference, it is just de-tuned. I had mine tuned to 305hp with no mods. The suspension, discs, brakes and wheels are all different though. It also has an uprated chassis as well. It was a great car. Well it was till it was written off

  4. Oh by the way. The turbo is not smaller. It's the same, exactly same as the RS

  5. Nice car they are those GT220, looking forward seeing some pictures when you have it, welcome along anyway.

  9. It seems I messed up with my previous post above. Sorry, but time window to edit has expired :worried: Maybe an admin can delete it.

    Hopefully this will work now...

  10. Nice car, the only thing I regret on the MK3 GT is the absence of exhaust at the rear, the MK 2 GT had double exhaust in the middle to give it a bit more sporty look about it, but the mk3 it is missing this I think.

Nice car though. just need to be lowered and away you go.

  11. Very nice car!

As people have said on here I own a GT180 estate with RS engine, cup gearbox, 360bhp+

  12. It's a different concept IMHO. The GT220 is understated at every angle and that suits me perfectly. It is still comfortable, makes a good daily and doesn't catch any eye, while still keeps most of the performance - unless your game is to track it, but certainly not mine, not at my age.

The MK3 hatch rear end is not particularly appealing. However I didn't choose this car for the looks. The true sound (no fake synth noises), the good old MPI port injection, a good old iron block dated from the early 80s. That is the old school taste I was after. When I test drove my unit, the experience of starting the engine and driving off gave me an immediate flashback that I had when first drove a Kadett GSi when I was 19. No other car managed to deliver the same feeling in the many years in between. And I'm talking here about the 'warm' GT220. It's a lot of car for the money, and the kind of car from past times that will never come back. Sorry for the nostalgic minute

  13. Hi tutuur, impressive gains for a GT180, I see you are the man to ask for performance  If I ever feel myself craving for more power I'll surely knock at your door.

  14. I know what you mean, which is why myself went for a MK2 GT dci too, understated but i fitted a full RS chassis setup with cup dampers and H&R springs including brakes and gearbox (no LSD sadly in dci), gave it that stance & handling i was after and not the fatsest 0-60 but fun around twisties, enough to add a big grin on my face when i get in it:grinning::grinning:

I remenber the kadett gsi, what a car that was, shame opel/vauxhall never really went for a proper hot hatch again

  15. Iirc the mk2 dci has a pk6 gearbox? Surely you can swap over a Megane 3 RS lsd in that case....

  16. I am considering LSD swap.
Is there any problem after LSD swap regarding ESP? I know i can disable it, but it is not way to go for me.

Is it still best case to buy used gearbox instead of just diff in your opinion ?

Sure you can fit just the diff or swap the gearbox, i was going to fit the mk3 gearbox to my 225, was told it wouldn't fit, but when the engine was out i fitted the box and almost bolted it in, the drive shaft ends were different so i left it for another day, that never came.
I then realised that i could have used the Dci drive shafts think that could have worked.
I also fitted a 1.9 diesel gearbox to my 225, fitted a quaiff diff, didn't notice and difference in gear ratio's either.
