Looking for some advise on tyres please chaps. Currently have MPSS in 235/40/18. I need 2 new tyres and can't get the same size tyre for the life of me. Been looking for months and the search is constantly finding a dead end. I love the tyres, they tick every box for me. So my question is.. could I run 2 245/40/18 MPSS on either front or rear? I've looked into the relation between rim width-tyre width. 8 inch rim=225-235 (max 245) 8.5 inch rim=235-245 (max 255) On paper it works with the Renault rim being 8.25 wide. Has anyone used 245's on standard or aftermarket wheels for the mk3? How did it effect the car? Good/bad... Cheers
I would stick to 235 for insurance purposes. I'd switch to Yokohama 105 for instance on that axle. I'd probably put them at the front if your rear MPSS still have plenty of depth. You might be surprised how good the turn-in feels, what with the stiffer sidewall.
Really want to avoid mixing tyres. And buying all 4 brand new seems a little daft with so much tread left on the tyres. I've heard of lads on here running 245+ sizes on aftermarket wheels so would that void their insurance?
You could buy 4 new tyres and sell the ones you have, if they are that much of a problem to find you should be able to shift them pretty quick. Just phone your insurance company and ask about wider tyres, (it won't cost), then you will know the true answer that's what they are there for. My insurance company wasn't interested as long as they are legal.
I've emailed the insurance company but reading into it a little bit that shouldn't be an issue. What I really want to know is performance related advise really. I would go down to 225 but then there is a smaller contact patch with the road surafce+they look shit as the car came with 225's on and the tyres looked stretched and made the wheels look tiny. The super sports have been mega. Great in all conditions but brilliant in the dry. I can't fault them so trying to find ways to stick with them. Another problem with buying all 4 is that I'm having clutch/flyweeh/salve Monday and it's cleaned me out!
I can see your point Jack, but i wouldn't go down a size go up, yes. I have bought a set of wider tyres to go on my mk2, think i might have gone a bit to far but will fit one and see how it looks. I put some 225 40 18's on a set of TD 1.3 and they are stretched slightly, probs not a problem on the road but on the track the side wall folds in.
more grip is good isn't it ??? They are 595 rs-r's going on team dynamics 1.3's they are 8,5 inch wide
got to finish off the 225 rsr's that are on them first, probably after Silverstone. You doing Silverstone ????
I am enjoying mine so much, i can tinker with it to my hearts content, did look at a cup s, but playing and messing around with £25k car just for the track seemed a bit silly, might look at an R26 and at least i can swap stuff over
They were not quite as much as that Ian, even new. Sub £20k despite loads of options inc Recaros. That's a fraction of what some people take on track as you know. The thing is, the risk of total loss is real but it's probably what's keeping me on my toes...
I did test drive one last year and that was reduced to £23995, did have the ohlins and the acro exhaust, but still £20k against £2k and money for trackdays, there is a 250 for sale at the moment for £6500 so tempted but i really need to sell either the Dci megane or my SL55 or both
A cheap 250 with some ASTs or Nitrons, decent pads and some sticky tyres in the way to go for low budget fast trackdaying
