Twitchy Handling

  1. Hi all

Got a bit of a issue with the R26 and hope you guys can possibly help shed some light on it...

When travelling on a dual carriageway at the speed limit, when the car hits standing surface water it causes the car to feel like it loses traction and twitchy. It does not inspire confidence at all!!

Im guessing its something like a worn track rod end or possibly ball joint?

The only other thing that could relate to it is I got a set of cooksport springs fitted (with new dampers all round) just before Christmas and the problem wasnt there before!

Not has time to investigate the TRE's or ball joints yet, just thought Id run it past everyone to see what you all think??

    Any help greatly received

    Thanks

  2. what tyres are you running?

  3. Could be a host of things from ball joints, twist links, drop links, swivel hub bearings too.

Sounds like tyres to be fair... But check TRE and have the hubs looked at as the bolt holding it in may have come loose.

  5. Cheers guys.

Running PS3s only about 1000 miles on them!

  6. Could just be the natural sensation of going from effectively dry grip to slight aquaplaning maybe?

Are you absolutely sure something is wrong? The sensation you're describing sounds like normal behavior to me tbh. They're twitchy cars anyway - water just adds to this.

  7. Yea I get what your saying about the aquaplanning, and does feel like that a little, just concerned as it never done it before.

I suppose what im asking is it possibly linked to fitting the cooksports? Couldnt see how tho!

  8. Also, swivel hub bearings have been done!

  9. I get this in my R26 and I think it is a characteristic of the car. When you run through deep water you do get aquaplaning in any car, but I suspect a combination of the R26 handling and the LSD means it does get a bit twitchy through deep puddles.

Basically when I hit deep water, the front end will want to drift one way. It is really unsettling for driver and passengers! Just need to be careful with deep puddles.

It's been like that since I got the car regardless of springs (now on cooksports), tyres (have used new summer/winter tyres), or refreshed suspension components (tie-rods, drop links, swivel hub bearings).

Take your time with heavy rain, and be wary that it will happen!

  10. Thanks pal. Good to hear someone else has had similar issue.

To be honest Im not 100% convinced it the characteristics of the car, as it never done it in the past, owned the car getting on for 3 years now, and is something that has started to happen in the last few weeks

  11. Just to say, doing a 300 mile round trip yesterday is the pouring rain, lots of standing water on the A303, the Megane behaved brilliantly, hitting some of the puddles at speed and never a problem. I know alot of people highly rate Michelins, I've got the Continental 5's and they really inspired confidence, good grip too when accelerating out of some corners. I hear Continental have now released the 6's that was originally just for the ctr, defo' going to try these next time.

  12. Funnily enough I did a 400 mile round trip yday taking a mate to pick up a new car and was having this twitchy problem with the handling all day.

Thanks for the advice about the Contis but Ive run PS3's since Ive had the car and not had a problem in the past?!

  13. Tyre pressures/Track rod ends/ axial BJs, anti twist links/ front toe setting/ damaged rear beam from a rear wheel knock (pot hole/ curb)/ loose steering rack bushes/worn steering bush/ worn track control arm bushes or BJ/ worn steering column UJ or loose pinch bolt/ worn top mounts affecting camber (bump steer).

Anything with some wear in it that takes up the slack suddenly when exposed to indifferent axle rolling resistance.
