Traction control

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Markkingmonkey, Dec 16, 2018.

  1. Haven’t had my 275 trophy for long but I have noticed there doesn’t seem to be a button to turn the traction control off? Am I being blind or is it permanent?

Also thinking about buying a DV for nostalgia from my R5GT turbo days, are they safe to run? Heard talk in a Subaru page they can cause engine failures?

    Hi Mark
The button is down on the right , think it the middle one, push it quickly for sports mode, press and hold for about 3-4 seconds and that turns the traction control off, the info display will go orange

  3. Press and hold the sport mode button and it will go to race mode and everything will be off. Ive a dump valve and never had any issues or heard of them causing an issue

  4. Ok cheers, you recommend turning off for track driving?

  6. I’d be inclined keep that traction ON especially as you’re new to car it’s very effective at ‘nibbling’ at rear callipers as it attempts keep vehicle stable if worst should happen

Fully off unless you like wasting rear pads

Pads are cheaper than if he bins it :laughing::laughing::laughing:

If you are even remotely talented you won't have any issues binning it, unless you're a complete tool [emoji1787]

Fwiw, I killed a brand new set of PF97s in two laps of ring in the damp. Stuck another set in then carried on and done another 30 odd that trip with a few other damp ones with TC fully off and they barely wore [emoji51]

  10. Yes on track TC will have done for rear pads, it’s all good on road at civilian pace but day in Alps or wales and they’ll be done again

  11. I’ve been to the ring 4 times, not saying I’m a pro but I’ve taken far less capable cars round there without binning it, and if this is anything in comparison to the R26 I took round you’d either need to be a complete chump or very unlucky to bin it. I don’t know too much about these cars so excuse this question but why would TC do a set of rear pads? I always thought the power would be cut or the brake to the slipping wheel is applied? Am I to surmise the Renault applies the rear brakes?

The ESP system brakes and pulses the rear brakes on them to stop you ending up in the scenery. Even in the wet with ESP and TC fully off you would have to do something monumentally retarded to bin it

  13. It's not the traction control that does the pads it's the stability system, but they both get turned off together when you operate the button.

  14. I’ve seen a few of those types at the ring lol

  15. This is a bit of a silly comment. People crash cars all the time. To say the above with all systems off is ridiculous. Even racing drivers crash with cars miles more callable than a Megane road car. Don’t give silly advise

    Your having a laugh right?

We are talking about on track, with plenty run off and far more grip that you find on the road in the wet.

If you can't control a megane in the wet with no assists, driving isn't for you.

  17. One of the stupidest thing I’ve heard this. I’m saying no more

I'm guessing you use ESP on track then?

  19. Spoken like a man who's never driven cadwell in the wet

  20. Never have it on on track and the back end is larey as fuck!! Watch any video of the meg on YouTube by ‘evo’ or Chris Harris or the like and they say exactly the same. For a novice driver turning the esp off in the wet on track is just stupid. End of

Load of rubbish, if you think the rear end on it is "lairy", you need to learn to be smoother or you have issues with how it's setup.

It's no where near some mad oversteer bias machine, unless you provoke it. Even more so on near standard cars, not to mention he's hardly a novice driver that's came from a 1 litre Micra.

Have you even done a proper wet trackday in one?

  22. I did cadwell in the wet last month - the back end is quite lairy :tongueout:
It kicked out a few times on me - with traction control on

A mate of mine spun at Donington - he's been doing track days for 20 years in hot hatchbacks, so definitely not a novice.

Even coming from a background of M3's and MX5's - I would still say it's a lively back end and with the run off at Cadwell being less than a foot before you hit a barrier in places, I definitely wouldn't recommend people run with ESP off until they've had time to find the breaking point and how to deal with it.

Can't really find where the limit of the chassis and tyre is with the safety systems still enabled, not to mention not being able to save it without TC cutting power to the front axle.

Anyway, novice or not, wet or dry, ESP off everytime and learn how to drive smoothly or get tutuiton and enjoy being able to utilise the car to its full.

    Peace

  24. I should clarify the situation before someone tells me I can't drive or don't understand lift off oversteer

I was on the power through hall bends. Very wet track. Caterham in front of me braked so I had to lift. Back end kicked right out. Couldn't apply power without hitting the slowing caterham so had to hold the slide and bring the back end back in.

But yeah there's about 6" of run off before a wall there. It's a track day not a proper race. You can't control what others do. I don't see the benefit in running in the wet with no ESP when you have no idea how others around you will drive and can force you into a bad situation.

BUT I do agree it can be a twat and kill power when you really need it.

    Just my 2p

Nice one, a video of someone provoking it to step out, come on now

Can you point me to all the videos of Meganes on wet trackdays oversteering and spinning everywhere?

  27. Professional drivers talking about the car in the wet on road. If you’re still gonna go on about it with the above comments from others too, you’re deluded

  28. Any more?

    All cranking videos too btw!!

    Bite way too easy.

Ill make sure to leave my esp on when it's wet then, maybe a fiesta is safer

Since we are posting videos, here's one in torrential rain in a near enough stock MK3, without ESP.

This on the other hand was trail braking.

Anyhoo, I'm done now. We'll have to agree to disagree but ime of 6+ years of ownership with well over 50/60 days at various places Inc pissing wet days they ain't that bad unless provoked.

    Merry Christmas

  32. Not everyone runs your setup and tyres and stuff though flash bags :tongueout:

The rear end on mine got noticeably worse when I fitted spacers... but it looks better lol

  33. -Jamie-

That was a standard car though[emoji38]

Know what you mean RE rear spacers though, I tried them years ago and took them off, doesn't like having the wider rear track for sure

  34. No it's sketchy as hell now I'm on cheap winter tyres in the rain even on the road.
It handled 100x better without them but looked shit

Id say mine felt and drove the best on its OEM cup wheels then on the ET55 OZ, as it keeps scrub radius etc how it was designed. Just looks shit, as you say lol

  36. will it be good to have those esp / traction control all off during trackday as a learning path? i have my 205Mi16 (dont even have abs) for more than 2 decades and enjoyed some happy trackday events. the 2nd week with my megane 2 i was extremely surprised the capability of it with all safety devices on. after that i started to have those switched off and learn the chassis again. i would say if you are not familiar with it, slow down a bit and don't just rely on those devices, any shitty handling car can be good as a learner tool.

  37. Personally I turn it off on the track. It's much too intrusive.
