TPMS - what are my options

  1. About a week ago I switched to different rims with winter tyres, put them all level etc..

Today one of the wheels was at 1.0bar.. very very low.. it was leaking at the seal and got it fixed.

Now, I do regularly check my pressures but 1bar is just dangerously low and the car gave no warning light or beep.

Eu regulations say all cars newer than 2010 need to be equipped with some sort of TPMS of the factory??

Has anyone retrofitted OEM sensors with a car that didn't have them?

Or is my best bet to go with some aftermarket ones, those you can screw on top of the valve?

    Anyone had experience with either?

  2. Did your winter wheels have Renault OE spec TPMS sensors in them, and were you getting pressure readings before you suffered the pressure loss?

EU regs relate to all new cars produced after November 2014 and this means it is necessary to have the TPMS tell tale on the dash for a low tyre pressure.

In terms of fitting OEM spec sensors, I would recommend getting genuine replacements as they're more likely to work. People have indicated that with the M3RS you can just fit new sensors, drive and it picks them up, but I've not tried this.

In terms of aftermarket, if you go down this route you'll probably want to get the TPMS warning saying sensors are absent turned off which probably means a trip to the dealer.

As for the screw on type, these work by depressing the core to let air out of the valve into the cap which screws on using a standard Schrader valve and the cap seals against the valve. I personally wouldn't go anywhere near that as a concept for long term use because of the risk of air leakage over time. Also, valves are not designed to have weights hanging off them, which experience significant g loadings.

As above really - unless you bought new sensors for your winter rims/tyres then the car has no way of knowing the tyre pressures, hence it will not alert you if they get low.

The OEM sensors about £30 each from RPD. I am not sure if all Megane 3 RS models came with a tyre pressure management system.

Could you view the tyre pressures for your previous wheels/tyres on your dash before you swapped to the new wheels/tyres? If so, you could use the sensors from your summer wheels with your winter wheels, or buy 4 new sensors so the winter wheels has its own set.

  4. The car doesn't have sensors on the summer wheels either.

I was told these winter wheel did have sensors in them, but after removing the tyre of the rim yesterday they clearly did not..

Well unlucky for me my car is 2014, but build in 2013.

I will check with renault if it's possible to just fit sensors and activate it in the display so it shows up.

  5. pretty sure there activated using clip

  6. Renault dealer told me it's not possible to retrofit the sensors..
Seriously how hard could it be?

Anyone knows where the receiver for the tyre sensors is located? So I can check if it's there.
