265 Timing belt workshop manual

  1. Hi all,

Ive only recently got my 265. I’ve noticed the fuel economy is very poor. From experience with the 182 engines I know the timing off slightly causes this. I cannot get over 30mpg. Even resetting after fuelling and cruising below 60, the most I’ve seen was 30.0mpg.

I have a fairly rough idle when cold. I know these engines aren’t the most refined at idle anyway though.

Timing belt was changed about 30k ago in 2019 by the previous owner. Wasn’t a Renault specialist so for my own peace of mind I’m going to check the timing and if I have to strip it right down to replace the belt I will.

I have all the tools required as I’ve done a number of F4R engines.

Does anyone have the Renault workshop manual for this? I like having all the torque settings etc and I generally like following the Renault workshop manual were possible.

Also am I right in thinking you don’t need to always replace the dephaser pulley like the f4r?

    Thanks
    Richard.

  2. I do have a Renault workshop manual for the timing belt but it's in French. Torque values easy to understand and I can assist with translation if needed.

Regarding the fuel consumption, with my stock 265 I do average 32MPG when being gentle and near 34MPG when swapping my right foot for a feather so I'll reckon you're not far from the true.
For the variable pulley, it's a personal choice... Even with a car running perfectly I rather spend the extra £90 than having to spend another 6 hours of my time doing the job all over again down the line.
If you search on this forum, you'll find lots of rough idle linked with the pulley.

  3. I actually disconnected the battery to try and band aid fix my tyre pressure sensor fault. Threw in some millers injector cleaner also. Drove the car for the first time today. Idle is a lot better, and mpg is up to 32.6. First I’ve seen that.

My timing belt was replaced by a Renault garage. The suppling dealer of the car from new. I misread the service book.

I’m also able to change gear at 2k rpm today whereas before the engine didn’t pull cleanly in the next gear when doing this. Today it pulls cleanly in the next gear.

That all being said the ambient temp today is approx 12 degrees less than it has been since I got the car 2 weeks ago.
