Suspension Refresh time

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by John Clavery, Jun 15, 2018.

  1. Was thinking of going down the coilover route, but decided on new cup shocks, top mounts and CookSport springs as I only intend to track the car at most twice a year.

Due to be fitted next Thurs  IMG_20180614_172637.jpg IMG_20180615_105719.jpg IMG_20180614_172637.jpg IMG_20180615_105719.jpg

  2. How much did all this cost?

  3. £374 for Shocks x4 plus 2 top mounts from RPD via Paul.
    £195 for the CookSport springs.

  4. lowering springs with oem shocks is wrong.... for sure...

  5. Why?

  6. Because ideally you match the springs and damper together. However, I wouldn't say that it's wrong, just not ideal. There are plenty of examples where sensibly matched springs to OEM dampers have improved lap times with no other changes. So long as it is not significantly lower (ideally same height) or outrageously stiffer.

  7. Ah, ok.
Thanks for the advice. I was still undecided when they arrived.
Might just stick with originals then and change the shocks

  8. Okay.

Did some online research, seems to be best to keep standard Cup springs with oem shocks, so Cooksports are going back.

  9. Wouldn't overly worry fella

I've been running cooksports with cup set up and it's fine

  10. On a MK3?

How's the handling compared to cup springs?

  11. on my R26 with new OEM shocks and cooksports, the ride is terrible.
Car turns in better, and obviously looks so much better with the 35mm drop.
But when you push on,the springs dont have enough compression to deal with bumps.
You just end up crashing into the bumpstops, upsetting the cars balance.
If you dont drive hard, then its not so bad.
Just goes to show how brilliant the OEM set up is.
I only put on the cooksports,as they came as a package deal..Wish i hadnt.

  12. Christ, I'm confused :tearsofjoy::tearsofjoy::tonguewink:

  13. basically..you get a harder ride with 35mm lowered springs.
No getting away from that,no matter what you put on,if they ride lower.
If you can put up with it,put them on.
If you think the ride is stiff already.,.dont.

  14. Think I've decided already. Leave the standard cup springs on.

  15. i was tempted because my car is running aftermarket lower offset wheels.
On standard springs it looks ridiculous.
Its such a shame, because the car looks great on the cooksports.

  16. I'm running a MK3 265, just wondering if they would be different on my motor as they are only 25mm drop?

  17. possibly. There must be a reason why Renaultsports ride so high though.

  18. Mind made up.
    Thanks all for the advice.
Gonna stick with original Cup springs.

matt e South East RSM Area Rep

It sell the dampers and springs and look at the bc racing coilovers or look at the H&R springs

  20. On my RS 250 I have Cup shocks with H&R springs. Ride feels fine to me, height much better and handling is awsome.

Just to add another twist. Don't think you would be disappointed with H&R springs on a 265.

  21. Too late now.
It's in tomorrow for new shocks and top mounts.

  23. Well, I've had the new cup shocks and top mounts fitted with the original cup springs.
Drives and holds the road so much better.
One of those things, where you don't realise how worn parts are until you replace them with new.

  24. How many miles had your old shocks done?

  25. 45k

  26. Mine have done nearly 60k and it’s starting to feel a bit floaty.

  27. mine had done 48k.Springs,shocks,swivel joints and most of the steering rack all tired.
    so much sharper with refresh.

  28. Yep. Defo worth doing. Feels solid as a rock now
