265 Suspension knock/Creak when hot

  1. Hello All,

So after having brand new cup suspension and Grams springs fitted ive developed a top mount type knock when the cars heated up and then a proper creak when its very hot. Either after an extreme ride or like yesterdays track day.

So in every day driving the car has no creaks/knocks for the first 10 mins or so, once warmed up I get this top mount type of knock. Noise is only noticeable at slower speeds or turning at junctions etc. However when the car is extremely hot im getting a proper creak when steering left or right.

Ive been back to a friends garage who fitted this, weve been through everything to check that all is tight and torqued correctly. Weve also been around it with a pry bar and cant see anything obvious.

Ive bought all Renault replacement parts so new cup shocks and top mounts but then have fitted Gram springs. One thing my friend had noticed with the original setup is that the springs fit super snug to the top mounts etc. However on inspection we seem to have a tiny 2mm or so gap between the spring and top mount. If you grab the spring you can give it a little wiggle a create a tiny knock noise. It must be this but is is the springs or top mounts thats the issue?

performance wise zero issues, great handling on track, no weird play or vibrations etc

Heres a couple of videos to hopefully help.

Vid 1: after a 20 min drive this is my free riding down a hill, you can here the knocking noise

  2. This sounds exactly the same as my 250 cup. I was beginning to think the knocking was coming from the steering module. Or the swivel hubs ,or even the cv joints ?? Are you suggesting the spring is moving side to side ,on the top mounts, causing the knocking. Or the top mount bearing has play in it. I have a stethoscope,il have a listen to it,il get someone to push the wing up and down, see if I can isolate the noise.

  3. Yes the spring moving. Its like the spring isn't quite long enough. The top mounts are brand new so I don't think it's them.

Let me know how you get on.

  4. I read that the drive shaft support bearing, had been replaced on the drivers side, think it is only supported on that side ,and this cured the knocking .This sounds like a good suspect part for me to investigate ,because a young Herbert in a local tyre centre ,sprayed my driveshaft support bearing with brake cleaner,on my megane ,as a favour to a mean man,who I wish I didn't know ,and then he bragged about it on facebook. He emptied a whole can of brake cleaner on my bearings . I heard the man paid him £40 to "wreck what he could "??
So I reckon that could well be a starting point for me, and the sound would transmit through the body,I think that bearing is more open to the elements, as well, . I will report my findings, when I get the old one off.
Ps .If you do your own maintenance, least you know some idiot is not, fixing your exhaust then giving your wheel bearings the kiss of death, at the same time with brake cleaner. HE did the front and back bearings on my gordini twingo, one side only, this causes the car to wander,so you keep on taking it back, and the fitter (idiot) replaces all your front suspension, bit by bit to cure the wandering. But untill you replace the sabotaged front and rear bearings ,the car will keep wandering. It is apparently an old trick, designed To get your money off you. ? My rear disk with integral bearing lasted me 2 years ,after the sabotage ,I've still to replace the front.
