Hi I'd love some feedback on the life expectancy of suspension components on the phase 2. Specifically springs and dampers. I realise this is a very ambiguous request but if folk could give some use of mileage and age at the point they were changed that would help. I appreciate type of use makes a massive difference. I picked up my 175 RS Lux in April with 117k on it and it's now got 121k. I'd prefer the cup chassis treatment so suppose I'm looking for an excuse. The spring rate is very stiff being the diesel and I fear this is starting to show some damper fatigue.
i change my shocks around 60-70K miles always have been, better safe than mot and it does make a noticeable difference between new and old, if i can i change the springs too as they are prone to brake quite easily these days
Indeed. I've done it on most of the cars I've bought as I tend to spend similar money and get a an older car with more potential than a newer car I don't like as much. Hence around the 5-7 year old 100k mile club then change dampers and top mounts etc. It's just the cup chassis setup is around £800
I did a full refresh recently and replaced the springs and dampers. The suspension was 6 years old and had done 47k miles, so he the springs were corroded but the dampers were fine really. Tbh, I only replaced them for peace of mind. The top mounts on mine were fine too. Seems that the only things that were wearing was the track rods, stupid stupid steering rack (fixed with the bush), and corrosion on the springs. Not heard of any dampers failing but I agree with the other poster on a refresh nearing 100k miles
Hmmm. I'll try and visually inspect them. Both my track rod ends need doing. In fact I've got them ready to go on when I've ten minutes.
Mines just ticked over 50k and I had to replace the front springs due to one one snapping. Dampers and top mounts were fine so I didnt replace them, drives nice and tight still. And the car sees the track a few tims a year. Nice knowing that its all been apart and all the nuts/bolts and threads copper greased so I know it will come apart nicely if I ever need to do it again.
I bought my 250 (incl cup pack) with 30k miles on and it had a leaking front shock, so replaced both fronts. Now on 44k and noticed one of the new front ones is already leaking.
Had to change both my front dampers on my 250 after 4.5 years and 60k miles because they were knocking and were failing internally. Ended up changing the whole suspension with coilovers anyways, because why not! Never been happier.
