STEERING FAULT then full dash/electronic failure... ideas?

Took the meg for a car wash today and on the way home the display flashed up STEERING FAULT and went heavy, it lit up all the lights on the dash and the indicators wouldn't work, the radio died, the car still worked fine and after about 15 seconds all went back to normal, although it still said 'CHECK STEERING'... That went after a while too and all back to normal.

I can live with it as its only happened once before last summer, I'm replacing the OEM wheel with an OMP wheel the next few weeks so just wondering if there is an actual issue with the steering wheel/rack or if its electrics.

    odd one really... ideas?

  2. I think its Electronic PAS on these isnt it ? That would indicate a fault with that.

For all the dash lights to fail a possible earthing fault.

Water has got in somewhere it shouldnt I reckon. I would be checking the under bonnet fuse box for corrosion / water ingress

Hmmmm, I had just had it washed so points to that maybe? It having alot of work done soon so i can pull the fuse box apart and look at it then, it just shocked me is all, thought the steering was going to lock!

Dodgy earth on what part mate?

  7. Not sure Naith, I was working away when it happened and the repair was done by the stealers.

She had the exact same symptoms and that's what they put down on the work sheet, faulty earth.

  8. electrical fault... bad connection (water or dodgy earth as mentioned) I recon...

  9. Check earthing point on front cross member on passanger side, one on chassis leg, is the plastic inspection cover on the passenger inner wing wing if not head straight for fuse box for water ingress.. sorry for quick reply.

  10. Naith I had something very very similar to you but when my dash lit up like a xmas tree the car when into limp mode then just cut out, turned out fuse box in the engine bay was full of water, got to be expect up here in Scotland tho lol

Good info chaps, although I open the fuse box it's tight as hell and I doubt it'll be letting water in...

I'll check these points though and clean them up for sure.

    Thanks again chaps.

  12. I would go with water in the electronics Naith. Check the fuse box first then if that's ok check the multi plugs.

Just took her out and she did it again, I never got to check last time so I'm going to dive into the fuse box shortly.

What are the multi points lee?

  14. Multi plugs are all the electrical connection plugs. They should be waterproof but the rubber seals fail over time.

Ahh ok. Well I opened up the fuse box and disconnected everything. Reconnected it and it's all good. Well I ran it for 14 miles and it was. Just need to sort the battery out now as the trickle I've had it on hasn't sorted it enough.

  16. Take the battery off & give it a good overnight charge. That should sort it.

  17. I had a similar thing happen a couple of days after buying mine... I got the 'Steering Fault' message and an indication to stop and the powered steering stopped working, but everything else stayed fine. luckily I was on the motorway and managed to pull over, and after switching it off and on it was fine... Hasn't done it since (fingers crossed!)
