So, I have always liked the look of the Xenon headlights but having a poverty R26 I though I would have a go and splitting the headlights to paint the inserts. If you do decide to give it a go I would recommend buying a second hand set of lights to try on unless you have a fair bit of time to do it, this is not a "will do it over the weekend" job! I bought a craft knife and a load of spare blades, got out the heat gun and set to the headlights. This really does require a lot of patents, it took me 5 hours to split the first one. Pictures are obviously after everything was painted. After you get the lens off you can pull the insert out, you might need to cut some of the sealant to get it out. You can break the insert into parts making it easier to paint, the only area that needs masking up was the reflector for the indicator, I used a plastic primer for the base coat and a acrylic based satin black top coat. And to seal it all up again after the deed I just used some bathroom silicone sealant
Yoi should have left the paind vent out for few days on a sun. As the paint releases solvents for a week almost. Now those will be trapped in a headlight. Bice job thought (y)
That's actually a good idea . But seriously boardy would you be interested in doing other people's if the price was right ?
Ha ha I do love a good group buy! Er? Let me have a go at another set see if I can find a better way of splitting them, they are so time consuming to do them like I did.
i would be up for this if you painted them for me, could work on a swap service like the short shift units, P.S. I am finally get it sorted this Friday so will send back the original linkage on Monday
I will see how I get on with this second set, it's finding the time to spend doing them. Yeah no worries mate!
Not updated this for a while but finally stopped being lazy and sorted the other light. Here she is all done! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Honestly, it's a BALL ACHE of a job... I tackled this on a previous Evo8 that I owned... Tedious and I ended up with 'misting' on one of the lenses... meant bumper off, re-stripping and re-sealing.... never ever again.... [emoji53] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
What really helps is to buy (or borrow) some big G clamps to hold the lens and assembly tightly together while your silicon is setting.. also MAKE SURE you clean the internal side of the glass to remove any finger prints that you leave. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Supposedly the mk2 megane lights are a lot harder to separate than the mk3 or many other brands. Something to do with the sealant - its butyl rubber in most light units, but not the mk2.
