Speaker Replacement And Amp Installation

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by Josh_1, Apr 29, 2020.

  1. Hi, has any upgraded their speakers and possibly added an amp, as the standard speakers in my are really rubbish and have blown. I installed an amp like I have done in my previous vehicle which was a clio rs 2010 and didnt have a problem. But when doing the same in my 2014 Megane RS Trophy, my Alternator blew and the mechanic I used said that was what caused the issue. It's really thrown me and not sure whether to believe him or not as like i said I've done the same in all my previous cars.

    Any help?

  3. I can’t see how an amp would blow the alternator, I’ve fitted loads to my own and other people’s cars and never had that problem.

  4. What amp did you use?

I can't see any name brand manufacturers causing an issue even if they went faulty due to the protection circuitry they have, but there is some real Chineseium Ebay junk out there that could well overload an alternator if it went faulty. However, in that scenario things would probably get a bit flamey and a dodgy alternator would be the least of your problems.

Could also be worth checking the amp power wire with a multimeter for a partial short.

  5. it was an edge 2 channel amp, which like I say I have used it in my previous cars without any problems.

  6. What are the fuse(s) rated at on the side of it? If its something like 60A and you like playing it loud, it could be enough to finish off an alternator that's already a bit dicky.
