Single mass flyweel options

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Corey, Jan 5, 2014.

  1. The law of sod has shown it's face and I'm now in need of a new clutch setup on my R26. Can't complain as it's on 90k. I've had a chat with Fred at btm and got some sound advice and I'm also waiting to hear back from Mark black.

I just wanted to know if there are any other options for singlemass flywheels other than ktec as that's the route I'm taking now, in it for the long haul. Valeo motorsport apparently do one but i can't find any info on price or availability.

I'm bracing myself for a big bill of around 1k hoping that should cover the cost of the smf, R26R clutch and the slave cylinder and fitting. Has anyone recently updated there setup? If so any advice or info would be great.

Ps cars running stage 1, milltek system, itg kit, forge recirc. Planning on 630 injectors, and rs tunings full system Inc sports cat later in the year.

    Cheers

  2. Try TTV.

  3. Thanks Andy, hadn't heard of them, I'll give them a ring tomorrow.

  4. Helix too but I wouldn't recommend it personally.

  5. Paul @ RST can get SMF too..

  6. Is it worth the potential hassle that might accur if the standard clutch and fly wheel has lasted 90k , why go single mass anyway , what's the benefit

  7. The flywheel won't ever need changing Steve. 90k is exceptionally long for a clutch to last. Other problem is once you start ramping the torque the standard clutch won't hold it for long.

  8. Ann right, Has there been some problems with the single mass fly wheels

  9. They put a light on the dash on a euro 4 car I think. Needs mapping out.

  10. Cheers chaps, I'll give rstuning a ring as well. I'm not planning huge power mods as I'm more than happy with it at present, just a little more and then just keep on enjoying it. Just gauging prices and options so I can compare them to sticking with std oem equipment.

  11. Im sure paul at rst fitted a valeo motorsport clutch and flywheel to a megane recently, only to discover the pick up was something like 31degrees out and the vehicle wouldnt start!

Either helix kit or 20/20 flywheel with a r26.r clutch would be your best bet, unless your happy fitting standard parts?

  12. Excuse my ignorance Steven but what is a 20/20 flywheel ? Does that refer to the design, i.e number of teeth etc

    TTV , 20/20 make the K-tec SMF.

  14. Ahhhh I see thanks, I guess the issue with the dash light will be the same then unless I visit Paul.

  15. As Gray says mate. 20/20 vision make a smf and ktec sell it, but I'm sure you can buy it without going through ktec.
Helix have supposedly modified their organic clutch kit and now the pedal is very heavy, so might be better to try before you buy so to speak. My helix is heavier than standard, but manageable day to day.

  16. Yeah as Steven says if you decide you go down the helix route I strongly recommend you try it out first. I've got their latest organic clutch kit with the revised pressure plate and it's stupidly heavy.

The light thing is an odd one. We spent a day trying to get the flywheel to cause a glitch with a gen90 plugged in and datalogged all sorts, and nothing came up. Swap back to stock ECU and a light comes on. We even tried different types of crank sensors, signal filtration and found no difference. There's no actual running fault, just a light. Think we can disable the Iight though.

  18. You tried mine before you bought your kit :/
Is it still really heavy or has it bedded in and got lighter?

  19. Whats the differences in the parameters between euro 3 and 4, as it only happens with euro 4 cars?

  20. What light comes on ? If it's the engine light it needs to be off incase anything else is wrong

  21. Dan I have some part numbers for you to look into if it helps ? Its what the euro guys use.

  22. I know! That's why I bought it cause I don't think yours is heavy at all. It's still really heavy and there doesn't seem to be any sign of it getting any lighter.

  23. That's good to know Dan as your pretty local to me. As it's my daily it needs to drive comfortably as well as cope with the current mods and any future toys. I'll post back with any info I get tomorrow 're prices and options and update the thread. Thanks again for the info guys.

  24. Engine management and service spanner come on. They only flash up on my car when I'm gunning it though.

  25. I remember my mate buying a smf from k-tec, he said it wasn't a very good finish so he cleaned all the burs off and the light has never come on in nearly 2 years

The fault which logs on my car is "P0315 Crankshaft Position System Variation Not Learned"

It only occurs when accelerating and then letting off the throttle allowing the car to decelerate, normally comes on between 3 - 5K RPM.

after 3 or 4 driving cycles the EML goes out again.

  27. Strange

    Frustrating.

  29. Think I'd stick with a dual mass

Didn't know 20/20 did ktecs smf. Good to know. Not as if I'd wanna go through them.

Aftermarket ECUs don't see a signal glitch, so its a bug somewhere in the stock ECU.

TTV stuff is made about a mile from me, sadly the people that make them won't sell them except via TTV

  32. Just read that TTV Racing will be at the Autosport show next weekend in the engineering section if anyone is going.

  33. Is there really any benefit to SMF? I've heard some people say it doesn't absorb clutch engagement shock as much as DMF, so it puts more strain to the gearbox...

  34. Surely renault went to the trouble of fitting an expensive dual mass for a reason...

  35. Expensive items to replace ...

I think it was put in as it softens the drive.

  36. As I understand it (and I'm always happy to be corrected!)...

OEM road car clutch/flywheel set-ups tend to include vibration/shock force dampers built into either the flywheel, or the clutch plate:

    • A clutch set-up with a dual mass flywheel has damping springs built into a complex, multi-part flywheel.
    • A clutch designed for use with a SMF has a simple flywheel with some damping built into the clutch plate instead.

So, if you replace your original DMF with a SMF, but keep the same clutch plate, you will have removed the damping effect altogether.
If you replace a DMF with a full set-up including a SMF and an appropriate, damped clutch plate (e.g. Helix or Valeo) you should retain some damping effect (though possibly less?).

  37. If that's the case I still don't see why DMFs are becoming so popular amongst manufacturers despite years of traditional setups working just fine. Perhaps it is indeed intentionally fitted to fail early and cost a fortune in parts.

  38. Perhaps the DMF damping, and the smoothness resulting from it's weight/inertia is ultimately more effective than a SMF set-up at making the car easy to drive? I should think smoothness and driveability and the primary concerns of the manufacturer (especially on lumpy diesel engines). Or else perhaps the DMF system is easier and cheaper to adapt to a range of models with different engines and transmissions?

  39. When I had an E36 a SMF was something people would often fit when their DMF and clutch failed. The popular choice was actually the parts from the older E30, along with the starter motor too. Another more expensive option more suited to M3s was the use of an E34 M5 clutch and after market lightweight flywheel.
The only upshot I am aware of with a DMF is longer in-gear coasting time. You can use this to save some fuel, but it is really the only benefit.
A SMF will have your car revving like a motorbike. If you heel & toe (and I do) you'll have to blip the throttle with less force to get the revs required. The revs will drop quicker between up changes which can make it smoother. When you rev the car at a standstill it sounds better too.

  40. Well I've sent an email enquiry to TTV so hoping to hear back soon. Paul (RSTuning) can supply a smf for £280 plus vat so the hunt is on
