Hello everyone, My 250 has just started doing this: Basically when driving at say 60mph and i gently brake the car shudders and steering wheel shakes. It's more prominent at 40+mph and braking gently, If i brake heavily there's still plenty of stopping power and next to no shuddering. Any suggestions? P.S my 250 is a cup so has grooved discs Thanks in advance
Sounds like it could be pad deposits. Have you recently been on track or braking very hard? Sounds like pads deposits glazing the discs creating vibration. Whats the exact pad and discs combo you have?
pad deposits first shout, hard braking from fast speed should cure it also read on the french forum they get frozen discs alot replaced under warranty
If it pad deposits you'll need either the discs cleaning with brake cleaner or if its bad then get them skimmed and some better pads which shouldnt be expensive.
Pad deposits can be cleaned up with some hard breaking depending on what pads are being used. Brake cleaner will do nothing on pad deposits.
I've not done any track days however I did go out for a drive a few weeks ago where I used the brakes fairly heavily.
Yep, pad deposit from your short period of hard braking. As said cute is extreme braking from 70 to 20 repeated three four times, cearfull where you do it.
Unfortunately still got the problem , It does seem a bit better but that may all be in the mind. Is there anything i can visibly check?, I'm guessing take the wheels off and check both sides of the discs?
if it is pad deposits, i doubt you could get rid of that on the road. if you take the wheels off, give the discs a bit of a rub over with some emery cloth.
How hot did the brakes get? They need to get stinking hot for it to work. As mentioned it's tricky to do it on the road, need a dead straight deserted road.
Going like mad on the road with glazes discs probably isnt the best idea. I think I payed 30 quid to have mine skimmed and there perfect now. Plenty of places round the country have the machines.
Okay thanks, I'm guessing not that hot. I braked as hard as i could(Up until the ABS cut in) from 65-20 3 times, There's still lots of stopping power as it almost tour my face off lol.
Well I've been quoted £220 to skim all 4 discs, does that sound a good price?. He said the brakes could be a bit poor after there skimmed due to the pads bedding in again. Tempted to bite the bullet and just get new discs and pads
That seems excessive as you could buy new pads all around for cheaper than that and potentially solve the issue at the same time.
Shop around for a better price and replace the pads once the discs are skimmed. The discs wont need bedding in but the new pads will. Ask at a few garages you know as they maybe able to recommend someone. Local to you. Dave
Thanks for your help , I'll have a bit of a shop around as there's a few others that do skimming around here. Failing that i think i'll just get new discs and pads.
How did you get on with sorting this? What pads did you go for? iirc the oem pads are ferrodo too, sure I seen that written on them when I stripped them last
i know of a few who i do track days with that run the ds2500 and never have any problems, they aren't exactly slow either.
I run ds2500. I did 11000 miles last year, including 7 track days. When mot,the master tech said the pads were only 25% worn. (no sarcastic remarks saying I'm not going quick enough to wear them out please lads!!.) So, ds2500 pads, more than good enough for me.
I've followed you round track Arthur , try braking, that usually wears them down mate. You looking forward to spa mate, we are
Are they using plain or grooved disks do you know? I suspect plain disks might not be a great combination...
HC plain discs are brilliant, I'm one of the so called track guys and I use the DS 2500s with the PF 330 kit
Plain discs are bomb proof You an get pad deposits with most pads if you brake incorrectly .. 2500's are probably one of the most forgiving to be honest
Well I've not changed how I brake personally over the last 3-4 years of track days if anything I brake later and less now yet oem pads and plain discs didn't leave deposits, plain discs with ds2500 left deposits every time, oem pads and grooved discs left no deposits. Never got to try grooved discs with ds2500's and I'm not a lone voice in experiencing deposits with the ferodo pads. Just thinking that without the grooves you have nothing to sweep the face of the pad clean and maybe they need that. Have you used plain discs with ds2500s?
Erm yes I have used them And ds3000's and ds1.11's Ferodo pads have been proven on track by many people . Are the standard pads on a 250 not made by ferodo ? I'm sure I remember reading that they were
The backing plates have ferodo stamped on them but they aren't ds2500s. But I'm not questioning their performance, just suggesting there might be conditions that exacerbate the issue of deposits. Seems people are a bit overly defensive here, its only an attempt at discussion.....
Pad deposits only really occur from bad disc/pad mating in my experience. For example if you run oem discs with ferodo pads it could be fine, but then Joe blogs with the same car but aftermarket discs and ferrodo pads might get deposits. Or vice versa. It's down to the quality of materials and heat resistance. You couldn't run a set of cheapo pads with a PF big brake kit because the pads would be cooked in no time, or CL pads on cheap discs the same applies
