I think it's time for an upgrade but just wondered if the standard stuff is as usually bad as I've just experienced? I'm going to stick the meg on track this year finally and thought I'd try a 'spirited' test drive over some quiet (nee dead) country roads... After 3 (3!) corners at a decent pace I had severe brake fade and a lovely smell from the fronts, it also didn't brake straight either but that was probably more due to the road surface/camber... Surely brake fade shouldn't rear it's head after 3 corners or are they that rubbish? day to day I have no issue. Standard brembo pads with aftermarket grooved/drilled discs. Anyone else have any issues with standard stuff? Forgot to add both rear calipers are less than 6 months old with fresh standard discs and pads.
Standard stuff is ok for day to day, HC plain discs with DS2500 pads will be better or better still DS 1.11 pads, also a fluid change will work wonders
Standard pads should be better than that , try flushing the fluid Or as Steves says something like 2500's or yellow stuff will be good for road/track I drove my brothers the other day he's got yellow stuff front pads , they had a better cold bite than 2500's
I had the same as you mate with mine, I can be a tad hard on the brakes mind so prob all my fault, but wanted an improvement, steve is spot on bro, I changed the discs to .r grooved and then ds2500 pads, also typ 200 high temp fluid, almost happy as when on the welsh blat I did not have brake fade anymore but the pads seemed slightly spongy, so then got braided hoses all round and now very happy to be fair
Fluids almost new! Ate super blue. I thought people didn't rate ds2500's? At first I thought it might be the discs as I still can't 100% match them via the Internet (they were on when I bought it) but surely a disc is disc is a disc on the road?
Everyone has an opinion on pads mate almost as much as they do with tyres, all I can say is that I am very happy now with the improvements, discs, pads, fluid n hoses especially trying to follow 3 nutters on our recent welsh blat, no fade at all, just abit spongy but as said before the new hoses got rid of that too ...good luck on your choices daz
Do you want a track pad or a road/track pad, HC plain discs, good fluid loads of pads out their and most will have their own preference, I like DS 1.11s never any problems with no fade at all, choose a pad and try
I want something that is not annoying day to day but can put up with hard abuse when needed - but mainly fast road. Just out of interest can anyone actually figure out what these discs are? I honestly don't think they need changing as they were brand new when I got the car (picture was a few months after I got it) I think I'd rather spend the money on better lines, fluid and pads unless people think these discs are garbage
I can tell you they are mtec drilled and grooved, go on they're website, just google mtec discs. Now, they are decent enough for looks and a bit of fast road but anything more and you will get a fade noise from them. The reason for this, and it is not widely publicised, is due to the fact that they are discs bought in from a company named brake world. They are cheap discs, mtec just drill and groove them and, if you specify, heat treat them to prevent corrosion. I'm not saying they're a bad product but they are cheap discs ( see the price for rears with abs ring and bearing in place ). So your fluid and the pads are fine assuming they're stock been I pads. The discs are 100% your problem unless you have a sticking caliber. If you need any further please ask.
I looked at mtec discs before but dismissed them from the pictures as the curve of the groove didn't look the same to me.? Mind you I've never seen another pair up close so I can't be sure!
Yes mate they are mtec 100%! If you can be bothered to take them off, look at the outer rim of the disc, there'll be a stamped part number! Something like rs00723 if you put that into brake worlds website catalogue they bring the Meganes disc up. I've had a few sets mate I know them well, they're alright but nothing special very reasonable in price! I'm running them at the minute until my trackday in July! If it makes you feel better, I recently went tracking in my mates vectra gsi v6, that has mtecs on it and they rumbled loud on braking but still had the stopping power!
A new set of standard brembo pads lasted me a morning at castle.combe, after that they were gone... Not recommended!
I had a set of Mtec fitted to my puma, with Bermbo pads and other then some extra noise where fine. But I was running a Fiesta ST set up on it, so where not worked to hard. it looks like I have Mtec on my Megane and they are s**t no stopping power and (I've checked) the driver side disc is warped and they don't look that old
New discs and pads time then methinks! I'll start there as I can do that myself, if I'm still not happy I'll get some lines and change the fluid. I guess they were obviously chucked on to pass an mot before moving it on!
OEM brakes on both Meganes (R26 & 275) I've had are very poor IMHO. All new all round too. RS Clio brakes are in a different league.
So true massive difference my when I had standard pads on mine compared to the girlfriends 200 even though they use the same brake setup but their 100kgs lighter
I agree with this also. Tracked my 200 numerous times with standard brakes including fluid with no issues. Tracked the 265 once and the pads were cooked, I think it's down to the weight difference and also the speed as the megane is travelling a lot faster before braking.
Those are RDA dimpled and grooved rotors. Sold by the same mob that makes EBC pads (over here in Aussie land the discs are sold under the RDA brand but over in Europe i believe they may be sold as EBC). http://www.rdabrakes.com.au/page/Product-Rotors.aspx
My experience is exactly the same. Couldn't upset the Clio 3's brakes if I tried, but managed to annoy the megane on the first outing.
Are we talking about plain standard discs or gen drilled discs? Worried now have over £400 of gen discs and pads waiting to be fitted
You'll be fine with that setup. Standard oem stuff is good enough for the R26. But I'd definitely change pads and fluid if you're doing a lot of track time.
