Sanding touch-up paint

  1. I had a couple of little bits of paint on the edge of my doors that had chipped, so I bought the Renault touch-up and applied 3 coats and then a coat of the touch-up lacquer, having first given the existing metal & paint a light rub with 2000 W&D first and then a good clean.

I left this overnight so I assume the paint was fully hardened but when I gave it the lightest of rubs with a soaked bit of 2000 it just wore through the paint.

Is this a problem with the paint, me, or the grade of paper??

    Thanks

  2. What did you clean with before the paint?

Sounds like it hasn't adhered properly

  3. Thanks, I hadn’t thought of that. I had given it a wipe down with white-spirit before applying the paint, it was fully evaporated though, this wouldn’t have caused it could it??

The paint didn’t peal or flake off, as if it hadn’t adhered properly; it just wore away very quickly with just a few very light passes of the paper.

I’ve since had a look on t’internet and yes you can get hold of finer paper, but it’s not at for example Halfords. 2000 is usually the finest sold.

  4. It needs way more time than just a night to fully harden!

  5. I thought white spirit left a residue even after it evaporated?
Personally i'd try again with something else as a wipe down. Hot soapy water or petrol would be better than white spirit. And a light touch also helps with the sanding, as Tutur says it wont be fully hardened after a day maybe a month or three depending on how thick it is!

The only time ive ever had problems like that is when i've tried to sand it down a couple of hours later (impatient!). Normally the next day is ok with a very light touch, but iv'e always done my touch ups in the summer, im not sure how much longer the cold and the damp would effect the curing/ drying time.

  6. Would affect it loads!

  7. Thanks guys, it will have been left 5 days by the time I look at it next so hopefully will be properly dry then.

Do the touch up multiple times, so dont blob the paint on, build it up.

3000 grit would be a wise move especially on the edge of a door.

Look at most detailing shops hey stock the meguiars papers.

  9. Use a cocktail stick to build up the layers. Brushes can be too thick.

  10. Thanks, I had done, I just put 3 or 4 light brushed-on layers. 2000 is all that’s available at Halfords, will try and get to a motor factor at the weekend then and obtain some 3000.
