RS 225 front end rattle on loose surfaces.

  1. Hello again,

Having an issue with my 225 RS CUP.

I have a slight clunk at times when accelerating. I've replaced the engine mounts and the two dog bones which has reduced the clunk, bottom dog bone was toast.

However I still get a slight clunk when accelerating.

I get a far worse rattle though when I'm on any sort of corrugated surface like a dirt road or pot holes. Steering feels fine with no play though.

I had the front of the car up on jacks today and inspected all of the suspension. Everything seems tight with all the joints showing a lack of play. Steering was smooth so hopefully no issues with the Knuckle Bearings. I put new front shocks in a couple of years ago as the original blew while doing a track day at Symmons.

HOWEVER, I do seem to have a slight amount of movement on the fore and aft movement of the tyres - ie Inside Steering Tie Rod - Rack end.

The rack itself appears to be tight.

Has anyone else had a 'rattle' similar to mine that is down to the inner steering ball joints?

What is involved in changing them?

I've had this car for 15 years now. I still love it.

I had to replace the Crankshaft pulley and tensioner earlier this year, and the turbo boost solenoid,
but other then that my car has been very reliable which is amazing as she is 19 years old.

I have changed a couple of Tremecs though as they are not covered by Renault here in Tasmania.
And timing belt kit every 4 years.
    The AC still works too.

Hoping there isn't a clutch in my near future as the pedal seems to release pretty high now.

    Cheers,

    Carl
