265 Rev limit bounce.

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by Superfly, Aug 22, 2017.

  1. Two questions, with a cold start the engine limits the revs to something like 5,500 is it safe to rev into the limiter causing the overrun bang, or is this bad, I'm assuming you stay away, until warmed up, but perhaps the limiter is in a safe area to play with. 2nd question is the same, but with a warmed up engine, is it safe to let revs climb and pop then change gear, or must we rather rev and change just before popping, I would imagine just before is faster, however I'm asking just for the fun factor as it makes my day hearing it pop Obviously I'll not do it if it's going to be detrimental to the engine, perhaps some members would know if this was designed in to the car to give more driver experience?

  2. I've done it a few times by accident, with a cold engine and when it's fully warmed up.

A lot of people say it's bad for the turbo, a lot of people say it's fine if the car has warmer up, hence the limiter is there, which is effectively safe up until that point otherwise it wouldn't be there.

I know people who hit the limiter every time they drive their car and never had any issues and people who hit the limiter occasionally and it's caused them issues. I think it's the luck of the draw really.

Going near it when cold is daft, no issues when hot mind you...

  4. Bouncing an engine off a cold limiter isn't great. Bouncing it off a hot limiter just limits best acceleration.

  5. always give mine loads of warm up time, and try and stay away from the limiter if i can, although a few tracks, between certain corners have me hanging onto a gear and sometimes hit it.

  6. Never boot it when cold. End of.

Sometimes it's best just to clip the limiter between some corners, see my above video. I'm planning in a bit more in depth logging next time at KH to see if it's quicker shifting to 5th along the main straight or leaving it on the limiter briefly before Duffus, going to 5th would mean two downshifts

  8. 2 particular corners at Spa, feels too busy to change up if you know what i mean, just brushes the limiter before braking zone, be interested to see your data.

  9. Thanks peeps, much appreciated, def let the car warm up fully, then will try change just before popping and will pop once in a while for fun

  10. Just repeating what others have said really, but I'd never rev my car hard when cold, and certainly not to the limiter.

When it's warmed up however, I'll happily bounce it off the limiter for pops and bangs! It's not efficient to do it and would be quicker to change earlier, but on the road at least who cares.

I'm actually at Spa at the start of Oct as well so I'll do some testing, can't remember last time if I ever had to clip the limiter but I'm running 100bhp/torque more than I was and the rest of the car isn't standard like it was then

  12. Agree on protecting against the limiter when cold. I nearly always hit it on the start/finish straight at Knockhill, but thats more to do with a rush of blood that meaning it lol.

Slightly off topic, but I was at the ignition festival in glasgow earlier this month and was amazed at the numpties on the stands starting up a R8 V10+, an AMG GTR and various other cars and revving the bolloks off them on the stand to gather spectators and neds with their phones thinking they are shmee. I could only think that someone will be paying for a £100k+ car soon and not be aware of the amount of cold starts and rev kicking they have had.

  13. note to self....dont buy this car when he is finished with it......haha

  14. Always let your engine coolant, and oil warm up for a few miles before kicking the arse out of it!!!!! You see, there's this little thing called "Thermal Shock" that all metals suffer from!!! If you give it the beans before everything is up to temperature, then things can, and will, invariably fail! = One fucked engine!!! Ask any engine specialist about thrashing a cold engine, and I guarantee they will say the same!!! Only idiots cane a cold engine!!!! [emoji23]

  15. Surely common sense enters into this?!?!?! Who in their right mind thrashes a cold engine???

  16. I believe hire cars are fine with being thrashed from cold, I have never had one blow up on me yet, they also go over speed bumps far faster than any other car

  17. What's the fastest car in the world?!?!

    A hire car!!!!

Jeremy Clarkson was good enough to say this too!!! [emoji3]

I, unfortunately work at sea. On ships. Therefore am classed as a seaman. When seamen come to the end of a voyage and are preparing to go home, or their girlfriends home, or the nearest brothel or pub, their preferred form of transport is "the hire car".
After many, many high speed journeys to wherever, I can indeed say that a cold engine in a hire car, whilst attempting to kick the living shit out of it, didn't appear to adversely affect it! But, as it was indeed a hire hire, who gives a shit! The fucking things are bomb proof, no matter how hard you try to blow 'em up! And, I tried! For many a journey! Wouldn't dream of subjecting my own car to this kind of abuse!!! Still, never got one of the fuckers to go bang. And, believe me, I tried!!! [emoji3]

  18. I don't know about that. We managed to partially murder a Leon Diesel. She was new with only 89 miles on it.

We were so enraged by the fact we had to pay for a full tank and use it. Even though we were doing about 120 miles. We drove it everywhere in 1st or 2nd including the motorway. Just before we handed it back. It started smoking like a trooper.

  19. I just couldn't do that [emoji23][emoji23]. My father was a mechanic and engrained mechanical sympathy into me. Doesn't matter whose car I'm driving, always look after them. That said, I make plenty use of them. No point in looking after a car for the next guy!

  20. It was Spain and we were enraged
