So, I’ve seen a gearbox specialist today about my 250’s whining noise. Gearbox bearing seems likes the culprit so it’s coming out next week. Question is do I get the clutch or slave or both replaced whilst it’s out ? I know it makes sense for peace of mind and labour cost point of view but at 55k miles it should have a good bit of life left? Only driven on the road not a traffic light launcher either!
My clutch started to slip at 86k on my r26 so i got it done. Bearing in mind the cost of parts alone unless the clutch was slipping in 4th,5th or 6th under load i would leave it,if it aint broke dont fix it and all that. Just my thoughts
Mine was far gone at 60k kilometers of hard driving so i’d just get it checked while the gearbox is out. If the clutch plate looks worn then change it.
Are you planning on more power later on? If so it could be worth doing if you will need a uprated clutch later? My last mk2 clutch went at 60k, but I bought the car on 52 so cant comment on how it was driven before. Get it checked over while the box is off. If you end up with a new clutch, then might aswell change the slave cylinder too. Do you know what bearing it is thats shot in the box? May be worth changing the crank spigot bearing too if it has input shaft play.
Cheers all for the replies I think I’ll just get it checked out for wear once off and go from there .. No plans fir more power Not sure which bearing yet but will make sure crank spigot bearing is looked at too for any play
Im rebuilding my box now, my input bearing had gone, race had smashed and bearings where basically pushing each other round. Only thing that saved it was the spigot Anyway spigot bearing is definitely worth doing too if the clutch and flywheel are off, they are only around £15.
i had a bad whine on my gearbox on motorway added some great gearbox additive called EX120 by xado cost £15 the more i drove after adding it the quieter it got until guess what?......silent gearbox!2 years on still quiet as a mouse!snake oil?nope this worked for mei bought 2 as its great!but still got a full syringe left as didn`t need to add another yet!
For the sake of closure .. got my car back today . 2 of the pinion bearings were knackered causing the gearbox whine. 8 replaced in the end along with new slave cylinder. Clutch had plenty of life left so stuck with original. Car like new again
How much did it cost you? My 250 has been making a whining noise lately and today I coulda sworn I also smelled a clutchburning smell. not at all happy . Gonna cost a fortune.
I am gonna replace the oil on mine and hope the whine settles, but if it doesn't it looks like I'll have to go down same path as you. Do you mind telling me where you got the work done? I've seen a place in Peterborough called Planet Gears. they seem to have good reviews online. I might have to give them a call if my oil doesn't work .
