Recommended engine oil

  1. Alright chaps

My car has recently been serviced, prior to buying my motor, checked the service sheet renault I might add, they've used 5w/30 bulk? Clearly not up to spec for the motor and highly likely what they use for every motor that comes their way. So on that note, even though it's under warranty I'd rather put decent oil in, from cold start its slightly tappety, goes after a min at idle but I reckon quality oil will cure this. Fuchs Titan pro S 5w 40 or Fuchs Titan pro R? What's the difference?

  2. I just use the Renault, elf stuff does the same job. No need for fancy oil as long as it meets the spec.

  3. I get that completely but it's got tappet noise on start up and 5w 30 is that right?

  4. They all sound a bit tappety on cold start. Completely normal and it's 5w 40

  5. Ah is it?!! I honestly thought it was 5w/40

  6. Sorry, miss read your post, I thought you said it was 5/30. The fact renault have used 5-30 on both its services, would this have made any significant difference? Wear wise etc?

I would take it up with Renault let them know they have put 5/30 in and not 5/40 as per spec let them change it or leave it explain you want it noted in case of any engine probs will be covered by them.

  8. Very valid point ovy, it's in with them on Tuesday as I've noticed play in the drivers side bottom wishbone so I'll mention it to them, it's going into a different dealership as the original dealer that used to service it but at worst they as you said can note it on their system for future reference, I've always used elf oils in my 197 and never had any issues at all, no where near as tappety as this engine either

Exactly if it's noted at leased anything was to happen you would have a case. The 40w is the working heat end of the oil rating being a performance engine that can get a bit hot its not best running on 30w unless car was in somewhere like Alaska. Oil thins as it warms.

  10. It's only done 13000 so I'm not overly concerned, I'm just surprised a renault dealer would be blind to such basic requirements.

At first I never thought anything of it as I presumed maybe these engines ran a slightly lighter oil for the first couple of oil changes to aid bedding in or something

Sadly dealer service seems to be getting worse with many manufacturers hence more and more people turning to trusted independents.

  12. When mine was in at the local dealer which is a renaultsport branch the service sheet said they had torqued the wheels to 110nm, so they can't even get that right.

  13. Dare say the potential disaster if you never checked the service sheet Mike. To be honest, if it wasn't for warranty work, I probably wouldn't go to the dealers, just a shame some of the renault specialists can't claim the warranty work off RUK as they do a much better job
