So set aside some time on the weekend and the plan was to switch out the rear pads. As the caliper has seized on the back right, which means im now on the metal after just 2 months from my last set of discs and pads. So I couldnt get the top 18mm bolt off no matter how hard I tried, the bottom one came straight off. I tried heat, a pipe on the spanner. But no luck, anyone had a similar issue or is this one best sorted with an impact gun. If anyone is around the newcastle area and fancies doing this for me Id happily pay. I was quoted £410 from a garage to change Discs and fit a new caliper which seems crazy money? Any help would be good.
Crazy money! You tried blathering it in penetration fluid and keep doing it for a few days then try again
Thought as much mate all my other cars this has been a straightforward job. I dont have the time to so that every day is all. So frustrated with this car atm. Think it might be time to sell on for an rs250
Once you have removed the bottom bolt try levering the carrier back and forth until it loosens up. That's what I did.
I did mine last weekend. Jacked it up and used a long pipe/breaker bar. Tip-hit bolt with a hammer to loosen any rust in the thread first.
Just don't want to be hitting too much if they've become a little brittle over the years, don't want to be shearing anything.
But you can hit the bolt face just not any of the tools used to lever it. Hitting the face will help like Chris mentioned
Also the cruddy end that sticks out the other side of the plate can be an issue. Dirty rusted thread going through clean can cause problems. Soak in a penetrating fluid first when off leave in a pot of vinegar for an hour.
Think I need an impact gun as it will not budge, had a scaffy bar on the spanner and still would not move. I couldnt manage to get my breaker bar onto the top bolt. I have soaked it in wd40 and will have another crack saturday in the mean time the car sounds like a train pulling into a station
Managed to get them off eventually longer spanner and a scaffy bar. New rear caliper new brakes and pads fitted.
