R26 Rattle when driving slowly over bumpy ground....not suspension

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by jpmad4it, Jun 18, 2015.

  1. Hi all,

I've got a rattle on my R26 when I'm travelling slowly over bumpy ground. I've had a mechanic look and he said he can't see anything with the steering or suspension. What else can it be? It's kind of a continuous popping / rumble sound. Does the R26 have any issues with the top suspension struts or engine mounts?

Wondering what it can be?!?

    Cheers

  2. Yeah so does my 225.... usually when going up hill... any thoughts would be welcome....

  3. Have you checked the top plastic engine panels and the engine cover. If the plastic clips and rubber bungs are missing can cause a noise at low speeds and when suddenly stopping

  4. The engine cover is fine , but where are the top plastic engine panels located ? Cheers!

  5. Around the sides and on the front at the top of the engine bay. They're secured by those black plastic screw type clips

I've even heard of extremely loose centre caps making annoying rattles. It is a tricky one to say for certain though without seeing the car.

  7. Try rear exhaust hangers, sounds similar to mine recently, changing them cured it! 16quid from renaultpartsdirect.co.uk! Basically exhaust moves about if it's not under load can connect with rear beam or bumper giving a hollow knock or rumble if really bad!

  8. Thanks mate i'll check all the panels this weekend

Do you mean the centre caps on the wheels???

Its definitely coming from the front of the car. My gut feeling says its the suspension / steering, but I ain't no mechanic. Can the hub bearings rattle if they're goosed? I've had these done already but that was about 2-3 years ago now.

    Doing my head in now!!!

  9. If the hub bearings go, they can make a washer on the hub come loose which rattles around

  10. I thought it was just a problematic circular swivel bearing which gets replaced inside the hub?

  11. Yeah but when the bearing goes it can cause a bolt to work slightly loose and the attached washer rattles around, easy enough to see. Just pop your head down and see if any bolts are slightly loose!

  12. Ah I see! Thanks! I'll have a good rummage around this weekend.

  13. Nay probs, IIRC it's the lower one, behind the disc that can work it's way loose

  14. cool i'll let you know how i get on

  15. Not had chance to check the washer, but its in for MOT today and failed on broken front spring, so I'm thinking it's that which is causing the knocking at low speeds over bumps.

Well spotted last week Mr mechanic when i asked you check, you pleb.

  16. Damn you and your easily solved problem!

I shall keep looking.... Do drive shafts make knocking noises when they are on their way out?

  17. Yes when you are turning. Otherwise they really should not.

im getting a light knocking noise from the front drivers side of mine, my mechanic has checked everything plus pulled everything apart a few week ago to fit new springs and says everything is fine
I asked about the top mounts but he didnt think that could be the issue as they are fixed mounts on a megane - has anyone had any experience of knocking from top mounts?

  20. It would appear that the spring wasn't the culprit ffs. Not happy. I don't have a clue what it is. Is there Anyone local who specialises in the r26 who could take a look? I'm near Burnley
