R26.R suspension - or how to kill a unicorn

  1. Hello all,

Welcome to my idea of Crowd-based development.

I'm in the Megane RS world for some time now and every time you look for suspension you find anyone saying about the eye-watering R26.R shocks which you can't find unless another R26.R dies (which no one really wishes to happen).
Which made me wonder 2 things. How good or how different is this .R compared with the R26. The second question comes from my Renault background and I know they never spend money unless a very good reason behind it and carry-over is the magic word for them. So to cut this short, I think the .R magic shock is the same as the not-so-loved dCi Cup shock. But until now, this is just my idea.

The reason why I write this long post is to see if there are other people interested in finding the same thing. And if this is true, maybe we can do a community effort to properly document this.

    So my plan is:
    - put together all the shocks we have around us as spares or whatever (225, R26, dCi, dCi Cup, R26.R, maybe even a R27)
    - we can even extend this to the 250/265/275 versions or 197/200 versions (based on who wants to jump in)
    - gather some money around us (10-20£ each interested person)
    - send all the shocks to a suspension center and dyno them to really see how they perform and what is the difference between them
    - we can buy if we miss any of the above shocks (i hope not the R26.R)
    - pay for postage back and forth

The initial plan would be to test only the front shocks. Rears if there is enough interest and budget.

I'm willing to spend some time by collecting the shocks and taking them somewhere to do this and post-process the data in the end if this really gets somewhere. I will use my engineering skills to gather the data in an OEM fashion with everything taken into consideration.
We can also measure the known shocks (if someone has them available, like the KW, Gaz, Nitron, Koni Yellow...).

So, why would you be part of this?
    - Gain a lot of knowledge almost free.
    - This way we can de-mystify the R26.R shock.
    - Find the cheapest option which behaves the same or closest to .R
    - Finish all the pub-discussions with "I know for sure this shock is better than the other one..."
    - Feel the happiness of making part of a community with common interests.

What does it take to strive:
    - it depends how many shocks we can find available and people willing to share them for measurements.
    - if we manage to find at least 10-15 people paying 20£ each. If there are more people interested, we can extend this even further in terms of what we test (also rears).
    - enough interest to do things in the correct way.

So first let's see how much interest is, how many shocks we can find here and there and how many people are willing to put some money down.
    Waiting for feed-back

  2. I've got a full R26.R suspension kit all packed up in a box which I've taken off my R26.R as I have AST Coilovers fitted, the R26.R suspension has covered around 8000 miles.

  3. So, we have the unicorn!

Ian Gardiner at IG Racing in Wellingborough is your man for damper testing.

Forgot to say I have a set of 60k miles but good condition R26 shocks and springs sat in my garage. Good as in still nice and stiff, no free play and no leaks.

  6. I was thinking Quantum Racing, but I will talk with this guy as well to see who offers the best deal.

  7. I thought the megane r26r shocks were'nt anything special but just re valved for the springs due to the lighter weight, the springs where different ie different coil thickness

the clio trophy on the other hand had special sachs dampers with thicker pistons and external reservoirs

  8. R26.R are special through the high price Renault is selling them, through the high rating everyone give them when fitted to a normal R26 and through the high desirability.

I'm sure there is nothing unseen on them.

  9. Hmm...there is no genuine interest here it seems...

I'd be very surprised if the majority of people had spare shocks lying around - most people only care about the ones on their car. And finding people willing to take a daily off the road so the shock can be tested is unlikely - I'm afraid the user base isn't wide enough to do this.

I'd personally would like to see someone put standard R26 springs and shocks on an R26.R and give it to someone independent to test.

  11. I think we can find easily the shocks around us with enough interest.
Question is if people are really interested.

  12. Why not just ask Renault?

  13. I had a standard R26R,track and road, Now have R26, with BC suspension. I haven't a clue what it is set at,but road and track, seem the same to me.

  14. Do they have to be out of the car?

Could you not just get people with the relevant cars and shocks fitted go and get them tested?

Just curious you could make it a meet up. Just a thought.

  15. Hello everyone,

I want to kick-off this activity. Can you still help me lending me your suspension components to measure them?
Let me know and see what arrangaments needs to be made.
    Cheers,
    S.
