Hi all A friends car has een scratched down the side, looks like a key or some sharp object. Does anyone have any guidance of when the scratch can be repaired using a cutting/filling polish and when it needs a spray repair. Ive had a look at it and it appears veery shallow but can just grip the edge fo the paint with a finger nail. The paintwork is black and the scracth has now gone whuite which i assume is well into the colour coat. Any help/ ideas greatly appreciated.
I thought the general rule was you had to run your nail over it, If it catches your nail it's to deep to polish out? Respray and repair time. I might be wrong as i'm no expert!
you can repair it using touch up pens, however its a long process and you have to be very patient. it involves filling in the scratch then cutting back the over-run using a fine grade wet 'n' dry, then you can use a cutting paste followed by polish then wax. ive managed to get rid of a few stone chips this way, however depending on the length of the scratch it may be just as easy to get the panel resprayed?
If the scrathc do not affect the color layer, and only the transparent layer, then sand the hole part and respray only with tranparent, if it affect the color then repair time, worst case, as Torch says, you can fill with color and polish, refill and polish; ill say try first poolshing, but to c and be shure, some pics will help.

Hi Carl, I know your work from my bumper also. But this car is belongs to a work colleague and he has a black Merc S class, I don't know the exact reference but he asked me about if it's able to be cut down and machine polished out. I don't have photos but it's about 1m long on the door and wheel arch panel.
