Oil/Water Temperature Gauges

Discussion in 'Electrical & Interior - Security, ICE, Wiring Loom' started by Audio Addict, Nov 29, 2016.

  1. Hello,

I would like to add a temperature gauge for monitoring oil and water temps in my R26 so I can get an early warning of any issues particularly when on track when driving the car hard. Is it possible to use a gauge with a sensor unit (ie is there somewhere for the sensor to go) or can it be done easily utilising the OBD II port with a hard wired display of some sort?

    Thanks

  2. Water temperature you could do off the obd port. Scan gauge or similar.
If you want the oil temperature easiest way is to get a sandwich plate to fit the sensor.

  3. I use an ODB2 Bluetooth dongle with an Android head unit and Torque Pro to get water temps (and intake temps, boost pressure etc.)

I've seen a few people use a Scangauge to similar, if slightly more 'old school', effect.

Unfortunately oil temp\pressure isn't available through the ODB2 port - I've got prosport oil pressure and oil temp gauges, senders and a sandwich plate ready to go on my car - time is always against me though!

Gauges will go where the OEM clock\radio display is. There's a guide on here about how to get a switched 12v supply to them: http://www.rsmegane.com/threads/r26-12-volt-switched-power-for-gauges-etc.11468/

Sandwich plate gets fitted between the engine and the oil filter, and has 4 ports in it to allow senders\oil cooler to be plumbed in.

  4. When you say a sandwich plate, do you mean a fitting that goes between the block and the oil filter normally used for oil coolers?

  5. You replied quicker than i can type lol.

I did see the Android head unit in your build thread but I thought it looked expensive.

So with the sandwich plate do you just buy some blanking plugs for the other ports you're not using?

  6. Yeah, the head unit was £200 off Amazon; gives me Torque Pro, Harry's Lap Timer, Google Maps, Spotify and hands-free for my phone so I'm happy enough with that.

The sandwich plate I bought came with blanking plugs.

  7. If you fit an analogue water temp guage I don't know if you can use the OBD port
This is my set up. I've still got to fit the sender for the water temperature.

I bought a set of gauges and fitted them to mine, a turbo boost gauge, engine oil temp and oil pressure, took them back out after 8 months, as the boost unit packed in and while on track never really had time to look at them .
The oil temp on track would very rarely go over 105 deg C, oil pressure was anything up to 60psi cold and 25 after a good thrashing on track, if i need to look at any of these i now use my torque app.

  11. I mainly keep an eye on the oil temperature when on track, boost guage is a gimmick, just got it there for something to look at because it's always moving. [emoji16]

  12. You'll notice that I bonded the guage pod too tight to the base and got some upward flex which has left a little gap. I need to figure out a bead that will close the gap.

  13. Cheers fella. I'm currently in the process of fibreglassing a triple gauge pod inside a hollowed out clock/radio display. Or should I say, I'm currently making a mess

  17. No double DIN head unit for you then?

  18. There was a pioneer DAB unit in when I bought it but I've taken it out, I've also taken out the rear panels with the speakers in......the fronts will be taken out as well.

On on other note how do you post pictures, I've tried direct from my iPad with "upload an image" but they always go in at the top. I've tried hitting the picture icon and using Photobucket but the pictures never appear when I preview
