After a little advice here about what you guys use to secure your number plates. Basically I dont want to be drilling into my bumper so I have been using Velco tape up until now but I just noticed it has started melting again in the heat like it did last year. It seems the combined centre exhaust heat and the heat from the sun seems too much for the adhesive on the velcro tape and it "melts" and slides out of position causing the alignment of the plate to sag. This is currently the 3rd lot of velcro tape that is starting to do the same again now. When it happens I remove it all, clean the area and reapply. Any tips?
I've always used double sided tape or the number plate pads you can get from Halfords. Easy enough to remove with a bit of heat and some tar remover.
On a 250? The reason I ask is because I think the 250's centre exhaust is contributing alot of the problems that perhaps the 225 does not experience.
Have you used the HD Velcro circles you can get from halfords etc. they are very sticky and the Velcro is very strong too
I use these from Wilkinsons http://www.wilko.com/hooks-and-hang...und-black-16mm-x-16/invt/0343195?VBMST=velcro
I drilled mine, they're only plastic, even if you make a hash of it you can cover it up again with the number plate . 3M dual lock is very very strong stuff though, I got some pads off eBay for a few quid to stick my iPod nano to my centre console and once it's on it's going no where http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3M-DUAL-L..._Material_Nails_Fixing_MJ&hash=item3a5f611a05
Even with a hairdryer aimed at the plates on hot tyre plates don't just drop off so can't see it being a problem mate.
I fitted new plates to my 250 a couple of months ago, as they were expensive 'gel style' plates I didn't want to drill them. I fitted with good quality sticky pads and no problems at all so far. Don't be tempted to use the cheap sticky pads you can get on ebay as they are useless, found that out on my 225 trophy.... Also make sure you prepare the surface properly before fitting them, makes a big difference as to how they stick.
Yes mate. I started off with the Velcro circles (8 per plate, 4 top and 4 bottom) which are still going strong on the front plate its the rear Im having trouble with. The rear circles failed on the bumper side so even though the Velcro was attached still, they started to slide down the car from where I initially positioned them. I then tried some double sided tape from a local motorparts supplier which eventually did the same. Ive just removed the previous Velcro strips (some ebay job) and stuck some fresh on now. They don't drop off as such though that's the problem. They just sag and slide out of position from where I initially had them leaving a nice sticky smear trail on my bumper lol. Obviously there could be other factors here than just heat, maybe its the repeated heat up, cool down, heat up over the months that's the problem?
I have mine velcro'd on 3 on each plate. I used the large round ones from halfrauds and they have been fine.
