NS-2Rs : what pressure ?

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by nickfrog, Jun 4, 2016.

  1. Just fitted 4 in 180 on my Cup-S. Any suggested cold pressures for road use ?
And for track use (Spa+Ring) ?

    Thanks

    Nick

  2. Cold, 34 all round

Track, no such thing - simply do a couple of laps, come in and let them out, do a couple more, come in etc

At Snetterton I was finding front left needed to drop significantly more (due to Coram mainly) and was running 30 front, and hadn't bothered touching the rear (they were 33.5)

When I topped them back up from cold/road, front left was 25, right 27, so you need to do it independently

Spa and Ring aren't massively heavy on tyres. Start 32 cold and see how you go

However, best idea would be to throw them away and buy some Pilot Cup Sport 2s ;-)

  3. Cold, I'd run them on the manufacturers non-motorway standard pressures, maybe a touch less.

Track I'd go hot F36, R29, all equalised for circuit direction and loading.

  4. Thanks both !

Did you have a poor experience with them Neil ?

I'd love Cup 2s but they were over £600 vs £325 for the Nankang. I guess you get what you pay for etc... Aren't the Cup2s still a little soft of sidewall (even for a semi) ?

I was after shoulder protection rather than ultimate pace but we'll see how I get on with them this summer...

  5. Ran NS2R on the R26R. Good on road and track. Now i have anR26,the Eagle Fi is about the same on the road, but better on track, and is lasting longer.

  6. I used to have NKs on my old MX5. I've never been black flagged so much in my life lol the noise from the squealing is hilarious

But yeah, I reckon even though they are cheap, they're a false economy

All this chat about sidewalls... Dunno how quick you are but I suspect a lot of the chat on forums can be ignored. I didn't have a problem at Snetterton and was chucking it around Coram, and as they're good enough for Porsche on their GT2/3 RS cars, I would safely say our French cluttermobiles are likely to be OK !

But see how you get on, it's all about personal taste, but commercially it's a bit like the 888 v DZ03 argument. 888s cheaper, but I used to melt the fronts in half a day when I had an R26R. DZ03s would do a few days no problem

Only thing I would say about Spa/Ring is that you don't want to be doing high speed and get caught out by cack rubber and when you're out there, it's not like you want to spend an hour finding somewhere to get new tyres. Leaning on the tyres through corners like MHM, Bergwerk, Wipperman.... Would always prefer to have something that's a known quantity.

What kind of pace do you lap the ring in? Anything sub 8:30 and I'd suggest your margin for error is limited if you encounter traffic or need to make a correction...

  7. suppose it depends how you drive on trackThe instructor I've used swears by federal 595rsr and uses them in his tuition car. He reckons that learning to trail break effectively equals smooth quick and much longer tyre life. Whom I to argue. My current Feds have done 3 trackdays and a 600 mile driving tour. Loads of life left. I like them even though they get internet slating. At £62 a piece 225 45 17 they are cheap. Going to give the nankangs a try if nick doesn't melt them at Spa!

  8. On bmw e36 m3 to note.

  9. Some good points ! I'll see how I get on and might try the Cup 2 next time around - I'm not sure the Nankang are such an unknown quantity, they're the control tyre for several series. As for pace at the Ring, I don't time myself, much safer. And I will make a point of driving at 7/10ths around a couple of places...

  10. I'm sure you'll be quick on them. I've just tried to buy a spare set off wheels off eBay but he won't courier. I went round donnington in an e46 m3 on the nankangs and they were great.

  11. Bit late to this party but I used to run ns2r on my 450bhp rx7 and they were great! they were 245/ 265 and I used to run 27psi cold anymore and they would barely have a contact patch once warm
