R26 New hub bearings

Discussion in 'Suspension, Brakes, Wheels & Tyres section' started by jontyfivealive, Jun 10, 2015.

  1. What a difference with them done. Bit of a pain doing them... but steering is back to just how it should be. Very happy with the car again.

  2. My car seems to tramline alot when driving front seems skitty. Does that sound like hub bearings. Steering self centres thou. Also are these a diy job?

  3. If steering self centres it sounds like theyre ok. Best way to check them is remove the track rod end from the hub and twist the hub left to right etc. Mine would stick fast and stop me turning the steering. So smooth now after doing them.
I run a garage so ok for me took me about 2.5 -3hrs to do one side hub bearing and snapped spring.
If confidend with tools etc you could do it yourself.

  4. Am very competent with tools as maintain all my cars. Done cambelt on 172 and clutches for years. Just wanted to know if needed anything specialist. Will have a look when do brake refurb and strip down. Thanks

  5. If youve done a 172 cambelt. You can defo do a megane hub bearing! No special tools needed.

  6. Hi there, Where did you get the new bearing from and how much? my steering isnt self centring as it used to, and the other day whilst fitting new driveshafts i noticed one of the lower bearings wasnt sat flush which wont be helping things.

I see your from kendal. Where abouts is your garage at? Im gunna be needing a new cambelt before too long and i dont fancy tackling it myself so might have to pop in.

    cheers for any help mate

  7. Im at Car Clinic unit 2 kendal business park appleby road kendal LA96EW just down from morrisons. I got the bearings from aaron autos i think theyre in derby. I think the pair were about £80 inc postage. But i saw someone one here was mentioned that sells them. And yeah pop in an i can give you a quote on the belt.

  8. Just the answer I wanted. May change them later this year as a refresh then

  9. Gonna get my bearing pressed in locally, but how easy is it to remove hub itself. Guessing discs first then nut underneath what else do I need to remove.
Don't want to start and find I should to of asked first.

  10. I've found the easiest way is to remove the complete strut, hub and bottom arm as one. (Remove disc and caliper)Then split it all on the floor/bench. Undo the stab link off the bottom arm, then spin the arm round 180 degrees so you can undo the 13mm bolts holding the alloy plate to the bottom of the hub. This means you dont need to try and undo the bottom balljoint (which is a pain). As you cant remove the big lower bolt with the balljoint still in place. Then the bottom arm is out of the way. (You'll also need to remove the front lower cross member that holds up the radiator before you can remove the bottom arm). The rest is fairly straight forward. Just clean up hole where the bearing presses into. Not too bad really. Hope i havent bored you.

  11. Sounds a pain, and you did all that in a few hours

  12. Yeah did that one side last night. Its ok to do. First time i tried doing one i left the bottom arm on the car and messed about with the balljoint. Must have taken about 5 hr lol
