New head-unit, where to put all the new looms etc.??

  1. I’ve just removed the standard head-unit and am trying to fit a new Pioneer head-unit with new facia etc., god its tight behind there with the new loom and all the connectors.

I’ve taken the glovebox out to at least see what I’m doing from the side but the gaps are not big enough to get my hand in.

Any tips please for where to thread all the new looms?

Or any tips please for trim I can remove to get access to the back/sides?

    Thanks!

  2. it's a right pain. I have just fitted the small pioneer amp and needed a SOT harness. I did manage to squeeze the head unit back in. It was a matter of much swearing and cursing. I managed to get the plugs to go down the left side of the stereo as there is space there to get them in, but it's a bit of a blind juggle as you cannot get your hand in as you said.. perseverance is the name of the game!

  3. Thanks Darren

My hands are cut to shreds having already fitted the head-unit cage and then trying to position the looms out of the way through the cage.

I was hoping there was something/somewhere obvious I’ve missed, I ended up feeding the looms mostly upward behind the heater controls.

The quad-lock connector loom (from the Renault loom to Pioneer head-unit loom) is huge and along with the steering-wheel control loom with a little box of tricks on the end, and the amplified aerial loom, and the DAB aerial cable and phone-microphone cable it’s a complete mess.

I managed to fit everything and put all the facia and dashboard back together and then found out the DAB radio is picking up any reception (yes I know I should’ve tested everything first!!), therefore I’m hoping the aerial cable has just popped off and also one of the speakers isn’t working - I had to change the two pins around in the loom so I’m hoping that with all the faffing it’s also just come loose.

Taking the glove-box out let me see what I was doing from the side but I couldn’t actually get my hand through anywhere.

I never had this problem swapping head-units over in previous cars…..

  4. Get some pictures up of it fitted

I'm tempted to swap the HU, currently running an alpine ezi dab with new dab aerial on the existing cup radio

  5. In the end I found it easier to put all the looms and leads tucked out of the way to the upper left, there is actually quite a bit of room there. It was much easier with the glove-box removed and I could almost get my hand through to pull the loom/wires over and also keep them out of the way with a long screwdriver as I pushed the head-unit back in.
