Hi guys I recently posted the following with regards a strange grinding / squeaking noise on my RS250 Cup: http://www.rsmegane.com/showthread.php?4759-Misc-mechanical-squeak-grinding and after much arsing around and taking it to my local Fast Fit (Brake and Tyre "specialists"), they have told me I need discs all over. They have said though that because of the car and the fact they are brembo brakes / discs that the only people that can be provide them are Renault themselves? Surely that can't be true? Can you not buy them elsewhere? and if so, what would people recommend? They reckon all 4 will be the north side of £1000!! ... which really sucks when I am awaiting a delivery date for my new RS275 Trophy I would really not have to fork out that sort of cash at the moment. Having taken the front passenger wheel off on the weekend and run my finger round the disc, there is probably 0.25cm lip on the front and around 0.5cm the back. Pads looked low but okish. Any ideas or suggestions would be great about now Thanks for any help in advance Tom
Had anyone just tried cleaning all the brakes and giving them a 'service'? But yes, you can only get discs from Renault unless you go for some kind of upgrade but for all 4 discs and pads I'd guess it'd be a little over 500. I've just done the fronts on mine and the discs were 220 for a pair. Also, I wouldn't trust any kind of fast fit centres diagnosis on a car like this. They'll see a nice car and aim to take advantage imo
Hi Tom As Grumpy says, no where near £1000, Ads on here will be cheapest (I got my pads from him), but for a quick online comparison, K-Tec sell from disc for £262, rears for £258 http://www.k-tecracing.com/show_product.asp?id=4602&appid=20
I've got a set of Genuine grooved front discs still sealed in Renault box if your interested. Probably do them for £250 posted?
Think ads does them for about £200 ben, worth checking mind Tom, if your 275 is coming pressume you are part-exing or private selling?
Seems to me your thinking of spending loads of money even before the problems have been diagnoised fully. There are wear limit cut out marks on the disc edges to check the wear by eye if i remembef right. Could be as simple as a pad tight in the caliper or carrier.
Thanks for the replies guys ... Not as far as I know; I haven't personally, solely because I don't want to mess around too much with things I don't know a lot about. I think the people at Fast Fit just took the wheels off, checked the discs and pads and made their assessments. Will definitely speak with Ads then. After pikcing up my car and speaking to Fast Fit, saying £1000 sounds incredibly steep, they soon started syaing well it could be less than that and they would need to see how much Renault sold them for etc. They did say though that if I can get they parts, they could fit them for a lot cheaper (obviosuly). That's great news thank you. I'll see what Ads can do but may very well take you up on the offer, if I do decide to change them. It's going in as part exchange and the deal and price for it has already been signed and sealed. Hopefully this wouldnt affect it too much if I wsn't to get them changed. Like I say, the squeaking doesnt happen until a good 10 minutes into the journey so I would just take the car in cold and hope for the best. No, don't get me wrong, I'm not going to rush into this in the slightest and I hope to avoid paying anything at all and just handing the keys over to Renault and let them deal with it. If I must get them fixed though, I will be getting at least one other set of eyes on it to see what they think. I was merely on here asking for advise
How soon are you changing the car? As above if you can hold of changing them then do that especially if paper work is signed and they have guaranteed you a price. Obviously if there dangerously low that's different as your still using it.
That's a load of rubbish mate, unless the pad is dangerously low and you've a lip on the discs I wouldn't worry. May be worth checking your brake fluid too as a good fluid makes a hell of a difference. On buying pads and discs though, I'd go to Adam as suggested as his prices really are unbeatable.
I have a factory exit date of the 1st of Decemeber .. but delivery date of the 6th Feb (Although the Renault delaership i bought it through thinks they can bring this forward). Paperwork is signed but I would still assume that there is wiggle room for them. The pads seem low but not dangerously low but the discs do have quite a large lip on the backside of them (Especially on the front, passenger side more so). Thank you, I'll check and maybe change the brake fluid if needs be. Also definitely enquire with Adam to see what sort of offer I can get. Cheers guys!
Then service the brakes, even if you don't change the pads/discs they need stripping and cleaning at LEAST once a year. I used to do my Clio every couple thousand miles because it got some pretty hard stick. If you don't know how or have the stuff to do it first take it to someone who does, the brembos on both the Clio and Megane are horrific for build of of dirt/dust. This can be the cause of any number of noises and problems like poor braking performance and general squeekyness. And if it doesn't work, it's cheaper than changing parts.
Ah good tips, I hadn't realised this needed doing this frequently, if at all. If I was to just nuke it with a jet wash ... presumably needs more than that though? As you say it would definitely be cheaper this way as well. Thank you!
Mick at diamond motors in long Eaton does a service on brakes for around £60 from memory. Certainly worth while getting them serviced/ checked out before splashing out on new parts all round.
You risk ripping wheel weights off and you just strip everything off the caliper including any anti-seize compound. Likely make any squeeling worse.
I always used too, found it made mine move better when it removed any brake dust from the caliper, I did however service mine quite frequently.
This is why ^^ you'll just wash away any grease that's meant to be in there keeping them from seizing. Strip and clean is always the best way.
Is there a minimum thickness that a 250 Cup brake disc can get to before its deemed dangerous? My old man has a micrometre so we're going to strip the wheels off and get a proper gauge of the situation at hand before spanking any money on anything. Cheers guys
On the fronts there is a bevelled section about 2-3 inches long on the outside lip of the disc. That's the wear indicator, once it's gone so are are the discs. But you'd probably have no groove left on the discs by that time.
