My 225 Trophy

  1. Just realised I haven't actually started a proper thread for my Megane, so this is it!

Back in 2010 I sold my Clio 197 and swore I'd never own another Renault, and since then I've owned 9 cars, 8 of which were Japanese! However, after a lot of deliberation I ended up buying this back in December...

Bad time of year to buy a car like this but my first impressions were definitely good, and my biggest surprise was the level of traction especially as the tyres were Chinese ditch-finders.

The only real fun I've had in the car so far was on a trip to Bala and couple of weeks after I bought it, which highlighted that the brakes may need upgrading!

I then had a spell of bad luck... I hit a pothole and buckled a rim which caused a load of grief sourcing and new wheel and tyre. The new wheel turned out to be a different colour to the others and the tyre fitters couldn't swap the tyre pressure sensor over, which was less than ideal! The washer bottle leaked, the LCD display had an intermittent fault, the powered steering stopped working on the M6, and to top all that off a local Renault specialist told me my steering rack was knackered! At this point I'd pretty much decided to sell it as a bad investment :worried:

Anyway, after finally getting everything sorted (apart from the steering rack which I'm not convinced is knackered) I could finally start enjoying the car again. The only mods so far are R26 mirror caps (because one of mine was damaged) and the addition of my private plate...

Since owning the Megane this is the first opportunity I've had to get both my cars looking nice and shiny, so a quick picture was mandatory!

I'm off to the Nurburgring in May, so hopefully the Renault will serve me well

  2. Very nice. I love Trophys.

  3. Great to see its all coming together for you mate and ya smart trophy , just aswell we made up cos now I know ya car, reg and where you are in may rofl , that's a fantastic pic of by the lake and ya car mate +1

  4. Great photos, seen them on Instagram

Nurburgring will be aweomse, I'm hoping to go in my trophy in August/September just waiting on dates.

Mine came with ditch finders on the rear and ps3's on the front, so the rears came off mine straight away to!

  5. This will be my fourth trip to the 'Ring, although only my second time driving... I went in the MX-5 last year.

    Daz

I wasn't sure about the R26 mirror caps when I was thinking of getting some but they're very subtle - Hmmm!

  7. My third this year.. My 172 in 2013, and a mates Puma in 2014. And this year will be in my Trophy. Only done 4 laps which is nothing.

Look forward to seeing the pictures when your out there and of your Trophy doing few laps.

  8. Lovely looking mate. Far cleaner than the Trophy I bought last month!! Any mods on yours?

I love the MX5, best handling car I ever owned and to this day still the car I had my best ever driving moment in

  9. Thanks for the comments

My Trophy is standard but I'm looking at going stage 1 once the weather picks up, plus some better pads and tyres.

I actually prefer driving the MX-5, I think it feels more special and raw.

  10. Well I haven't actually done much at the car other than some Brembo discs and Mintex 1144 pads, along with a set of RS-R's. Once they were scrubbed-in nicely I headed here...

I managed a 9:15 BTG lap which I'm pretty contented with considering the amount of traffic and my lack of experience on the track. I drove with the intention of getting the car home in one piece!

  12. Photos are great! And lap to, was following your trip on your Instagram. Haha.

My trip is in September. My 3rd trip, 1st in the trophy.

What tyres was you using? And standard suspension?

  13. Thanks, Craig!

I've done 4 trips now but only 2 as a driver, but I think we'll be going every year from now on... The car is completely standard except for Mintex 1144 pads and Brembo discs up front, and Federal RS-R tyres. The brakes were fine for road use but struggled a bit on track, but the tyres seemed pretty good but perhaps a little too soft for the size and weight of the car.
