Hi all need 2 new front tyres the rears are still nearly new (Obviously being front wheel drive) Don't know whether to get 2 new pss on the front or give potenza s001 just to try something different Or even 4 new ad08s Or is pss the best Road tyre
I wouldn't recommend AD08s if it's a car that gets used all year round, I mean... admittedly I drove my Clio around in snow with them on but they're a little sketchy with standing water. Not as bad as say a r888 by any means but once it gets cold they really do stop gripping too.
PSS aren't made in 235 which annoys me. I just bought some Federal 595 RsR and they are great. 78 per tyre which is a bargain I think.
Had ad08s on my civic type r but only did a summer and autumn with them but was awesome in the dry but can't comment on the winter weather
Oh they were awesome in the dry and even on damp roads/tracks, just maybe not an all rounder Preferred them to r888s tbh as they didn't suffer much more tyre roar than normal tyres.
Thanks think I'll stick to pss since I have them on rear and they have loads of life Beats buying 4 new ones
arghh just checked my tyre load rating and its y 92 cant seem to find any only y 88 think that's a no no isn't it mixing loads front and rear looks like ill be getting 4 tyres
That Tyreleader have them in 225/40/18 92s but they're 131 each, bit steep. Last time I looked they were round the 100 mark. Still be cheaper than buying 4 new mind..
I found federals rsr to also last a long time, not the grippiest of the semi slicks but very good value not too bad in the wet too what I did find tho is they are very noisy im ordering a set of nankang ns2R to try at the end of the month
I had AD08R's which offered improved wet performance. Thought they were great on my civic. My trophy also needs new fronts soon it's only got 7.5k on it! I guess heavy car and a lot of power eats them up. I'm in the same boat. Four new pss in the wider profile or just two ps2's to match the rears. I have to admit I've found the ps2's to be fantastic so far. Ok they give when pushed but they're bloody confidence inspiring overall and very predictable. Hmmmm
Did you have any problems with the PSS or just fancy a change btw? I was very tempted to try them on the 225s but decided against it and stuck with the oem 235 size at the last minute haha. Papped it. Although everyone seemed to tell me the PSS were physically same size as most 235s side by side... Ended up with 4x Conti 5P's.. Really impressive in the dry but don't find them as good as they should be in the wet for conti's.. Bit skittish sometimes. Meant to be there absolute max performance tyre..
I'd stick with the PS2 tbh. The Super sports while offering better grip in all conditions have softer sidewalls and with that loose a a lot of feel. Or even the PS4 if they are available now, meant to be based on the PSS as a true evolution from the PS2, not like the 3 was. I was running PSS before I put my winters on, still got two to refit after winter but I doubt I will, Cup 2s or similar for next year as my summer tyre
How do the PSS compare to the PS2 on track? I've heard people saying the PS2s go off quite quickly. Is it better to go for the 245 over the 225 PSS? Perhaps I'd be better going for the Cup 2s since if I'm going to be tracking the car, can't really afford to get Road and track tyres for now so would be a good compromise. I've not seen much info on the PS4s and very few places seem to be selling them. Those that do aren't much cheaper than what you can get Cup 2s for.
I tried pss's in 225/40/18, they were clearly worse than ps2, in terms of sidewall stiffness and steering response (they offered better grip but that is not the point for me). I am going to give a chance to potenza s001 this time. I was never disappointed with potenzas in the past. That is what I like in a tyre: http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/Bridgestone-Potenza-S001-Bridgestone-still-make-good-tyres.htm
I've tried lots of tyres over the years and various so called high performance brands and I've always been most pleased with Michelin tyres. Will probably stick with the PS2's as they are well priced and I find them pretty damn good across all conditions. Would love different wheels with cup 2 tyres for summer. A lot of money though so we shall see!
I've had both on track, The PS2 is surpisgnly good on track for a road tyre, yes it doesnt last as long as a proper R tyre but it offers enough grip to still be able to push on. If your running proper aggressive pads though they can't cope under braking, I tore chunks off mine from that. The PSS' are a step up again and are a good balance for Road and track, especially if its damp but i just can't get on with them due to the soft sidewalls and feel of them. PS4 are by all accounts the next evolution of the 2's and use some of the tech from the PSS, Pricewise they are only a bit more than what a PS2/PSS is and a fair bit cheaper than Cups, So I'm not sure where you seen them.
Cheers for the input. Where you seeing PS4? I've only found them on tyreleader and mytyres and the cheapest is £132. The cheapest I've found the Cups is £148 so not a huge difference per tyre, certainly a smaller difference than between PS4 and PS2. I've been checking tyreleader, mytyres, Black Circles, Camskill, Asda tyres and Oponeo. If I remember right you had 245s PSS on? Any reason choosing the 245 over 225?
I changed to 225 as they didn't have 235 in pss when I was buying The downside to pss is that they seem to have just vanished over the last couple of months had around 4mm left now I'm lucky if they have 2mm left Only use the car to pick her up from work at minute too and that's just city driving When they get quite low they are quite scary too it seems to be quite skittish
I noticed how useless they become when they get to around <4mm of tread on them as well. I'd expect their "ultimate" road tyre to perform consistently throughout their life. no shadow, Aye i was on 245's but after seeing a set of 225's they are actually not far off what a 235 PS2 was in width, So if i was ever to go back to them it would be in 225 flavour. Saying that it sounds like the 235's will be coming to the UK at some point in 2016
Now my PS2's are worn I get lots of wheel spin on take off but on the corners they still hold quite well. They are pretty much on the limit now, will have to replace soon. Disappointing to hear the sidewalls are so soft on the PPS. You cannot get them in the same profile as the PS2 so either going wider or more narrow is the only option clearly going wider will reduce feel somewhat but I would've thought going more narrow would improve things? The cup 2's are meant to be awful in the wet, although one guy said they were fine so who bloody knows lol..! Think I'll stick with PS2's for now. What do the PS4's look like then, has anyone got them?
On another note why do the likes of Camskill and blackcircles offer the same tyre but at different prices For example Bridgestone potenza s001 at 109 a tyre then another s001 exactly the same for 91 a tyre and that's on the same site
Are the more expensive tyres special fitment e.g. Porsche, Mercedes? I guess it could also be the same tyre but the cheaper one was manufactured at an earlier date.
I run PSS 245/40/18 the 97Y XL, they certainly have a lot softer sidewalls than the PS2 but i actually prefer the feedback they provide when pushing the limits, to me you can feel the deformation as the tyre loads up on a corner and really be in tune with the grip available. Obviously sidewalls are a personal preference. I do find i run the PSS at higher pressures than the PS2 or the sidewall will roll too much and you'll wear the shoulder disproportionally to the rest of the tyre (assuming pushing hard/track days with std geometry on the car). Also conversely to others in here i found the grip on my PSS has been consistent down to the wear markers, whereas on my PS2 the grip seemed to drop significantly towards the end of life. However this can be massively effected by the season when your tyres are low (cold vs warm weather, greasy roads etc..). Whilst both are clearly summer tyres I found the PS2 rubber seemed to suffer more in cold temperatures at being stiff than that of the PSS. I generally think this was just down to the PSS being softer in general which probably explains the better out right grip and being very quick to get to temperature. The PS4s sound interesting, look forward to reading reviews on these and trying some out sometime. Shame they only start at 17 inch, since they stopped the 16 inch PS2 i've been struggling to find a good tyre for the Clio - PS3's suck compared to PS2, PSS etc..
The reviews and decent tests on the PS4 will be a critical factor. I remember when Michelin released the PS3 and said it was an all round improvement on the PS2, but it didn't get a great response in general. Where the PS4 will sit in performance terms compared to the PSS will be interesting.
I have PS2's on the Trophy that are at the end of their life. I agree that the performance has dropped off massively but to be honest I think it is virtually all a function of the temperature, as you say, rather than a actual difference in the tyre. This is in the dry only - the wet weather grip is pretty bad. IIRC Michelin don't recommend the PS2 for use at ambient temps below 7°C so it's to be expected at this time of year. I think they hold on pretty well when you consider it's sometime 10° below the minimum temp they are supposed to work at.
Ps2 always been my favourite road tyre, have no intention of changing them unless these ps4's get raving reviews!
I quite enjoyed the PS3 which was fitted to my Megane when I bought it. As an all round tyre on the road they were good both wet and dry although performance did drop off and on track they soon got too hot
The PS3s on the rear of mine are heaily worn and the S001 on the front are on their way too. Mines a 250 full fat with cup chassis, so will it be alright to run 225/40/18 tyres? I was thinking PS4s but i dont know what the detriment would be running 225 over 235? Sorry to hijack, figured its better posting here than start another thread
That settles it then. Every other person I ask just says 'id stick to 235'. Its £50 a corner cheaper on some tyres
Yeah, Blackcircles are £146 a corner for PS4 in 235. The PSS in 225 is £126. I dont track my car so im wonder8ng which would be best
I'm really happy with my Ps2's. They are nearly (or are) fully worn but still grip well! Great tyres really. It's true they lose their performance towards the end of their life but the same is true of all high performance tyres really. Ok so I need two fronts for mine. There appears to be a few options on the PS2's what's the actual difference I have zero clue? I looked at cup 2's in 235 X 40 X 18 but they are like £189 each!
What are the options? Just FYI, Amazon are doing them for just over £100 each with free delivery. http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003HEY7FK/?tag=rsmeg-21
