Modding an F1

  1. Hi everyone!

I’ve just introduced myself in the New Members section and thought I’d jump right in here. I currently own a 2006 Megane F1, and I’m looking to learn from the group and get some advice on a few mods/upgrades.

The car still runs stock internals, and I don’t intend to push it beyond its safe limits—just aiming for a bit more performance, around the 200kW at the wheels mark.

Current mods (done by the previous owner):

    • Decat + downpipe (63mm)

    • Mid-box delete

    • Stage 1 tune (presumably from RS Tuning SA)
I’ve recently acquired a complete RS250 turbo and plan to have it fully refurbished and balanced. Now, I’m weighing a few options and would appreciate your input:

    1. Turbo Choice:
    Would it be better to:

    • Hybridize my current 14T to something like a 16T, or

    • Use the refurbished RS250 turbo as-is?
Which would offer better performance per cost? And if I do hybridize, how large can I realistically go on the compressor wheel before it becomes inefficient or unreliable?

    2. Intercooler Suitability:
If I install the stock RS250 turbo, could I run the OEM intercooler for now?
(The car won’t see track time—just the occasional spirited run.)

    3. Upgraded Intercooler Options:
If I go the hybrid route, I’d definitely upgrade the intercooler. Locally in SA, bolt-on options are limited, so I’d likely fit a universal bar-and-plate intercooler (600 x 300 x 76mm) with custom piping/fabrication.
Would this be adequate for a hybrid turbo setup?

    4. Remap Requirement:
If I install the stock RS250 turbo, is a remap absolutely necessary right away?
I understand I won’t get the full potential out of it without a tune, but will it still run reasonably well in the interim?

    Future planned mods:

    • Full 76mm (3") exhaust system front to back

    • Upgraded rear muffler

    • Performance panel filter (retaining stock airbox)
Any advice, suggestions, or shared experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!
