Michelin pilot sport 4

  1. This has just won the 2017 tyre of the in evo. Gets very good reviews!! Well worth a read. It's a no brainer to opt for this tyre once you've read it!

  2. Link? can only find a 2016 review

  3. Looks like I made as good choice then  just need to change my rears too. Though it's tempting with my mileage to just get ado8r's

  4. Will have to buy the latest magazine chaps

  5. got them on my car..cant tell any difference between them and my previous MPSS.

It is a very good tyre. However I have gone to 4x AD08r on my car for mixed road and track duties, I ran right over on the sidewall on the PS2s on the front on track despite getting perfectly even wear on the tread. This has always been the achilles heal of Michelin road tyres, and given that I had PS4 on the back they seem very very close to me, the PS4 seems to be the first genuine replacement for the PS2, very similar tyre. Hopefully the AD08r will meet my requirements better but no doubt about it these are amazing road tyres and seem to grip surprisingly well on track for a tyre of this type.

  7. Haven't tracked mine but it's a fantastic tyre for the road.

  8. On my meg. Clio, I found that they are fine for the road, but seemed to have too much sidewall give for the track.

  9. Buy Evo, read the full report. It's mostly objective and compares tyres on a level playing field.

Everyone's driving styles, abilities and needs are different. Therefore our opinions when it comes to something so variable as tyres are fairly arbitrary.

My Continental 5's have lasted the best part of 25k, others can't get more than 5k out of them.
What use is that information to anybody, none. It's all about controlled comparisons.

I'm just about to change my tyres to the Evo champion.
I'll give my subjective opinion thereafter
    :-))

  10. Yep I agree with what you're saying but the test is very thorough in all conditions and tested against all brands so pretty conclusive I'd say for the best road tyre.

Conti 5 lasting 25k is unheard of!!!

  11. Mostly motorway miles, and I am a smooth driver, even on track.

  12. The Pilot Sport 4S is more track orientated. Limited sizes though.

  13. I've got another set of wheels with Federal 595's for the track.

I'm booked in on 22nd to have 4x pilot sport 4 fitted. £509 from National Tyres + £29 for front alignment.

Grantw did you look at black circles? I just had 4 x 225/40/18 PS4 XL's fitted for £420 from them

  15. Yep - checked everywhere - National were the cheapest

Black Circles £563 Vs £509 for National.

  16. Wonder if this review is the reason prices have jumped up by £10 per corner on Black Circles!

I have them all round - just a road car but by far the best tyres I've had

  18. you simply cannot go wrong with michelin high end sport tyres for all weather compromise, fast road driving.
I have had them on all my cars dating back to my Mk1 Rs Turbo escort!
You have to be driving like a nutter on the road to get them to give up grip,on my R26.

I was careful to monitor pressures however they have worn on the sides and in the centre of the tire as well

  20. Just had the Pilot Sport 4's fitted. Too early to report much feedback except to say that it was torrential rain driving home and the car went through some big flood puddles, there was no feeling of aquaplaning or wiggling.

I got 28,114 miles out of the Conti 5's, they were barely on the legal limit. I did one front / rear rotation during their tenure and they seem to have worn evenly across all four and across the width. I don't check my tyre pressures that often - I should do really, I just look at them :dizzy:

  21. dont know how in hell you managed that..my 5p`s lasted 5-6k max..all fast B roads,as my R26 isnt a daily driver.
I really liked them, but obviously didnt last long..even wear across the tyre.

Have 5s on the mrs daily driver Pug 207 GT, similarly they don't seem to last that great, ISTR last years set she got about 14k miles from them cross country commuting. Went with em again as we got a really good price from a local fitter and they drive great wet and dry on that car.

  23. There is a difference between the Conti 5 and 5P. Softer compound on the 5P.

  24. Hi Guys, long story short I’m swapping my 18’s for a set of 19’s and will treat them to some PS4’s as they got such good reviews in EVO!

My 18’s have 235/40/18 Y (95) Reinforced tyres, could you please confirm if I need to go for reinforced tyres again what with them also having a smaller sidewall??

    ….I need 235/35/19 tyres don’t I for the 19’s?

I have the tyre pressures on my door for my standard 18’s do I use the same pressures for the new 19’s??

    Thanks!

  25. Michelin don't do the PS4 for the 19 inch in 235/35.

  26. They do according to Blackcircles, "235/35 R19 Y (91)", and they're XL, which must be "reinforced"

They're £180 each though!! (same at National.)

My question was whether this size is correct for the MK3 on 19's? (as mine came with 18's).

  27. Blackcircle only list the PS4S which is a different tyre to the PS4.

Are you sure which tyre you really want? The PS4S is a more track orientated tyre.

  28. Ah, I'd totally missed that! Thanks and bugger. So I cant get PS4's then????.......

  29. Not yet. Maybe Mich will up the size range available eventually. Of course if the tyre is more important than the rim size/style you can always stick with the 18 inchers......

  30. Thanks

Nope, I'm going for 19's purely for aesthetics, the PS4's got such good reviews though in EVO that I thought it was a good opportunity to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

Without starting another "which tyre" thread, which is the best Michelin "fast road" tyre then in 235/35/19?:

    We have PS3 at £154

    PSS at £175

    PS4S at £180.

The CUP 2’S are £206 which is just more than I can justify paying.

The PS4S look to get great reviews, all along the lines of “amazing grip whatever the weather”, the car is just a once or twice a month weekend back-road blaster and pop to B&Q, I’m realistically not going to be taking it on track (although that was my original idea and I may one day get around to it), may be actually they would suit my needs?

Are the 4S’ more track orientated than the PSS?

  31. ......I've just read a review that says the 4S has replaced the PSS.

  32. Well if it has to be a Michelin and you don't mind paying a premium and want the grip, out of those - the PS4S.

  33. thats probally it then..loads of grip..while it lasted.

  34. Ado8r is probally the best compromise tyre out there..if it comes in your size.
I cant feel any difference between the PSS and PS4 in dry grip.
PS4 seems to be better in the wet..but not by a huge margin.

  35. Thanks all, I won't hijack the thread anymore as this was meant to be about PS4's, in the end I'm going to go with a set of PS4S' (PSS version 4 apparently!).

  36. I've heard they are excellent but obviously don't come in 18 inch

  37. Thanks, will see how I get on with them and report back.

  38. I had Pilot Sport 4's fitted to my 18" Tibors and can't fault them

If I had 19" wheels I'd opt for the PS4S instead though, they seem to be the next step up in performance in almost all conditions.

  39. Can attest to this being a great tyre in the wet and the dry. I have a friend who runs contisport5 on his megane rs and he says no way will his car perform in the wet like mine can

Michelin have always been one of the top wet road tyres, the PSS was a good tyre just sorely let down by its sidewalls. If i ever decide to go back to a UHP road tyre ill be changing my AD08R's for some PS4's
