So my car seems to have developed this. It doesn't happen all the time, but often after taking a turn and straightening up, the car will want to continue going in the direction I just turned. I then end up having to over turn the opposite direction and back to centre to get the car going straight. This is far from ideal as I end up weaving trying to get it lined up. Has anyone else experienced this and what's the likely cause? Thanks in advance.
Something wrong with your alignment would be my best guess. Either pot hole and something bend, or some bush/bearing is worn out. Off to the workshop!
Any way I can check the gun bearings? Will get the car jacked up tomorrow and wheels off to have a look, although I don't know exactly what I'm looking at/for. Don't think it's alignment, it's more like something is sticking and won't fully return to centre. When it does the car tracks fine. It's intermittent too.
Any way I can check the hub bearings? Will get the car jacked up tomorrow and wheels off to have a look, although I don't know exactly what I'm looking at/for. To check the hub bearings jack the front up and disconnect the track rod ends from the hubs. Then try and move the hubs in both directions, if they move freely the bearings are fine. If they are stiff and need a bit of force to move or if they have play in them the bearings are knackered.
I knew mine were fucked when I joined a motorway off a slip road boosted up and nearly ended up in central reservation
OP, the usual test is as you describe - the steering won't properly self center. This is a common issue on these cars. Have a search on here and you should find many threads. It used to be a costly fix but it's now common to replace the bearings, rather than Renaults method of replacing the whole hub carrier.
Little update. Jacked the left side of the car up the other day and got the wheel off. Now, I'm really not very mechanical so didn't really know what I was looking for but everything as far as I could tell looked ok. Gave everything g a brush over to remove all the crap that had built up. Now, went to do the drivers side....locking wheel but seized. Snapped one key, the other rounded off, great. So couldn't get the wheel off which left me with not much option. Any drove the car the next day and the steer problem has gone but instead I now have a really annoying squeaking coming for the right front wheel when I go over any kind of bump etc. Weird seeing as I never got to do anything on that side, maybe when the left side was jacked up it's caused something on the other side. So today I have another crack at the right wheel and still cannot get the fucker off. So I jack the car up and get under it to see if I can see anything with the wheel still in place and I think I found the problem. Im guessing this shouldn't be loose. Washer moves freely and the nuts moves ever so slightly and there's a few mm of threat showing. Problem I have is that I can't get to the bloody thing with the wheel in place. So my question is, firstly what is this loose bolt and why would it have come loose. Now I can't get to a garage until Thursday where I'm hoping they can free the locked nut so I can get the wheel off. What is then the solution to this loose nut?
The image above is for a mk2 Megane but I think the design is more or less the same. The bolt you're looking at is at no.1 in the image. It's a common issue on the Megane - the bolt will eventually come undone due to gravity, vibrations & a seizing bearing. Edit - just realised yours is a mk2.
On a related subject, my RS250 Cup mapped to about 300 hp creates an odd sensation on motorways while passing (don't really notice it any time else). Namely, it is rather unstable and "darty" on full boost passes. More or less the same story on breaking (albeit in a less alarming guise as during acceleration it would not be unlikely to end up in a hedge - truly sketchy and odd, and this is coming from a guy who owned an E55 which span the tires during similar manouvers and I do not consider it even close to being as dangerous as the RS). Suspension is new and has been properly aligned. LSD equipped. Winter tires though. Thoughts?
