On a casual drive this morning, Pulled out to pass someone at low speed, then boom. Flames out the bonnet/Arch. Thankfully i always carry an extinguisher in my car with my track prep or i would of had nothing left. One of the most horrible feelings I've had seeing it on fire. Not nice.
It doesnt seem too bad but ill know the full extent in the next couple days. Seems like the Aux belt let go taking out the fuel lines.
Wow!Makes me wanna go buy an extinguisher. I'm guessing this sort of thing is very rare? Glad you were able to put it out.
Shit, now I feel like I should buy an extinguisher....or in fact that all cars should come fitted with one!
Wow. Glad it doesn't appear too bad and you're okay mate. Would it have been the end of the world if it was destroyed? Mods declared and everything? Has the belt been changed, or is it not due yet?
Glad youre ok mate! I had a bad car crash when I was 18 (well 3 actually) - this was the only car Ive ever had an extinguisher in and is the only car of mine that has ever gone on fire! typically! I woke up by the side of the road after someone pulled me out of the car - looked at my car, saw it on fire - tried telling people to go and get my extinguisher and then I passed out again lol - car had half a hub cap left unburnt - rest was totalled So Im not getting another extinguisher!
Same here - It was on the radar..... anyone know if this is up to the job - only £20 http://rrs-direct.com/store/extincteur-2-kg-rrs.html
Gutted Jamie - but well done for reacting quickly and managing to get it out. Did you burn your hands getting the bonnet open?
I wouldn't bother with a powder one, Make a proper mess if you ever have to use it, Speak to Chorlton on TS, He does them and is where i got mine from. 2kg Foam with a decent bracket. £30 IIRC and he can refill/service them for you. Didn't burn myself, Bonnet was pretty hot but i have Chefs hands LOL
Wow! Sorry to hear. I think i'm going to get a fire extinguisher in mine, this is the second thing in two weeks that's made me wonder about buying one.
Bloody hell. Glad you had the presence of mind to get after it quick as it does not take long to take hold. Seen a few cars destroyed over the years and its not nice. hope you get it sorted and back on the road soon.
I've always had one in board since I learnt to drive, never had to use it but you never know, as this shows...
Yeah, need to be very careful with wiring making sure it's all shielded so it can't get wet or short out.
OHHHhhh yes it does, if it is a supply of return pipe then possibly not, but if it is an injector pipe then it will only need a bit of heat for combustion.
Absolute bummer and I feel for you Jamie, bloody scary too, I remember 10yrs ago I was travelling to Yeovil down the M5 in my jag and unbeknown to me a leaking power steering pipe was pumping the shite all over my engine n downpipes, all was great while I was doing 70 as the wind was keeping it cool lol, but I have never seen so many cars n people move so quick when I pulled up to get petrol at the pumps and these almighty flames came gushing out the bonnet n up the windscreen, I can laugh now but boy did I do my fastest 0-30 in reverse lol, and the speed of the fire trucks was unreal lol. Pleased you got it under control mate and get to play another day
Isn't there a risk of ruining your electrics using a foam one though? Although i guess some so jet wash there engine bays...
Wouldn't a CO2 extinguisher be more suitable? Foam will surely feck up electrics! http://www.fireandsafetycentre.co.uk/fire-extinguisher-chart.php
No idea - was this the one you used jamie? It was the same guy that got jamie his one - guy off the trackscotland forum that can get it through his work. I was going to do my research on what I can and can't use it for once I find a suitable way of fixing it to the car so it doesn't fly around in the event of an incident. Is anyone a fireman on this? What do MSA/FIA spec ones contain?
Foam is fine, Its what the vast majority of track cars run, Plus have a look at the marshalls extinguishers next time your near a track..... I wouldn't touch powder, Fucking messy and Co2 isn't really used in cars. Papps, Mine was on a bracket in my old car under my drivers side bucket, Just kept this in the wheel well on the Megane but have a bracket en route to mount it under the seat LOL at people being worried about electrics in the event that you actually have to use it.
