250 Megane 3 Solid Mass Flywheel setup - Gear Rattle / Noise

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by dutchdog, Oct 8, 2020.

  1. I put in a solid mass flywheel and a solid (unsprung) clutch, with a OEM release bearing. And ran into some issues:

    1. When I rev my car, it sounds like a bag of marbles. Sound get worse the more I rev. I press clutch in and the noise is gone instantly
    2. Also when I am driving the car, and release my gas pedal in between shifts, basicly releasing pull on the car, it also slight rattles whilst driving. When keeping foot on gas and accelerating there is no noise. Gearbox fluid is full.

I have had numerous people tell me the following:

    - I have this setup on a Megane 2 and no rattles, it must be the gearbox itself as my setup works (then again he doesnt have a megane 3 box)
    - You need to use a sprung clutch, to avoid the rattles, as the vibrations are then dampened by the clutch instead of the DMF.
    - Its your input shaft or pivot bearing on the gearbox
    - Its your release bearing (doesnt make sense, it is new OEM, and noise would only be there when releasing clutch)

  2. I have a SMF they do make noise on the mk3, mine is mostly a metallic noise on startup and when your high up the rpm range and take your foot off the accelerator. It's normal with these, it's either that or keep forking out for renault dual mass that keep breaking. I think I seen somewhere that ktec or kam racing were making a sprung clutch for the mk3, that would solve the noise issues.

  3. My R26 does the exact same as you describe since I installed TTV single mass flywheel and R26R unsprung clutch.

At the firsts drives, it worried me a bit but since the car has been running fine, no issues, changes gears smothly and no vibrations through clutch pedal since nearly two years now, I would say its normal. Rally cars with lighter flywheels, stock gearboxes and agresive clutches, have the same sound but even louder.

  4. Hi mate which smf did you use out of interest, heard a lot of bad things about them on the mk3’s.
    Cheers

Normal on The MK3, terrible thing to do to them though
