Megane 197 Turbos - talk to me

Discussion in 'Megane Discussion' started by Frimley111R, Aug 4, 2016.

  1. Just noticed a couple on eBay and they look interesting and could allow me to swap my Megane for a sensible daily driver whilst having this. Anyone had one? It looks more exciting than my Megane as its smaller and lighter...

  2. Another random thought? Or are you actually serious? Maybe just a conversation starter?

    Just buy an R26.

The guys who works on my car is a big proponent of these having done 20+ conversions now (Paul @ Tech-1 Performance in Poole, former KTech mech), he will do the job for £2400 + parts. What you get is a car 100kg or so lighter than the R26 to start with + rear suspension you can actually adjust for geo + more options for track/race car parts such as roll cages. Personally having looked at two of these cars which he has had in when I have been there the past year or so it has put me right off mucking about with my R26 to much. Just seems better to me to start here for a full on FWD track car unless of course one wants to race the thing in which case you have no choice but to tune the Megane really as many series/championships take a dim view of engine swaps to create a model that never existed.

  4. Clio 200 body with Megane engine?

Yes exactly that, or 197 as they are much cheaper. Usual route would be 197 + crashed 225 to donate its oily bits.

  6. Sorry, typo in the title, I meant Clio 197 Turbo (with Megane engine)

  7. pm windle on this forum, I'm sure he's done it..

  8. Not worth paying for an expensive conversion as you only end up with a Megane with a Clio body. No LSD, even worse.

Sure, if you want something different and like to 'surprise' people with a pokey Clio, but it isn't going to be quicker on track £ for £ compared with modding an R26.

Only really worth it if you can pick a conversion already done and cheap where the previous owner has already lost big money on it.

Its not beyond the wit of man to fit a Quaiffe or Gripper whilst doing the job. Remind us again how you set the rear suspension geometry on a mk2 Megane, or get the mass down on the Megane to a like for like level to whatever state of prep is done to the Clio?

Its not about 'cheap thrills' but about putting the best of RS from that era into one car.

  10. Lol, I must be mad then. I am fitting a RS250 engine to my R26!

  11. Well worth doing, seems everyone has covered most points above. Only thing to add is that you can do it for less than 2k (if done right and using a donor car) and make sure you use the R26 box for the correct ratio's and diff.

  12. Of course if you give yourself an unlimited or large budget, possibilities are endless.

By the time you have sourced a decent donor Clio, Megane engine, LSD+box and paid to have it fitted, you still have a Clio on standard suspension, brakes and tyres. Apply that basic budget to a base R26 and you get a car that will run rings around the Clio, regardless of a bit of rear geo tweaking.

  13. I used my meg'd clio 197 as a daily for about 6 months, 70 miles a day on average. Better on fuel than the clio engine and cruise control still works so its perfect! Really can't fault it as a daily other than the induction noise at 5am is slightly annoying after a while lol
