Hello all, I ask for your expert opinions! Since the (great) re-map at RS Tuning a few weeks ago, the extra torque (342ftlbs) is playing havoc with wheel spin in second gear when the boost comes on strong. Would changing the springs to H&R, Eibach or similar, to reduce weight shift under acceleration, help? Also, what are your preferred soft and sticky tyres (for road use?) I don't mind about short lifespan providing I can make use of all (or most!) of the extra torque that the map provides. Thanks all.
do you have a cup spec car? How old are your tyres and what are they? Weight shift under acceleration actually helps with traction.
Non-cup spec car I'm afraid so no LSD. The tyres are vredenstein about 50% worn. I'm not sure why weight transfer from front to back under acceleration on a front wheel car would help traction? Thanks :-)
check out some drag cars and look how soft they are.. Sometimes tyres lose grip before they wear out - generally 4-5 years is ok but it's so dependant on different things. What type of vredenstein do you have?
Well the lack of diff, frankly leaves the discussion slightly futile I'm sorry. Save all of the money you would spend on springs and dampers, or coilovers, or tyres or frankly anything else and either, sell your car and buy a cup chassis car instead or put a diff in yours, either aftermarket or by retrofitting a cup gearbox. Nothing else will come anywhere close to controlling over 300lbft of torque through one 235mm wide tyre. Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk
OK, thanks guys...so next question is obvious...coat of a retro fit cup spec gearbox or is it not that simple?
Yep spot on. Recommendations on something more grippy? I used to run Yokohama A0008's on my Series McCrae Impreza years ago, they were really grippy.
It's my one criticism of the tyre tbh, for the price they have good lateral grip but straight line they don't cut it for the torque. Maybe something like an AD08 as a medium between a full semi-slick and a road tyre?
I have a Cup gearbox for sale cheap that needs a rebuild..... Be a cheap way to get a LSD and stick it in your box
Personal experience here on a stock non-cup car with added LSD box, but there is no way I'd go back to the non-LSD set up. I bought a 2nd hand box on here for around £425 and had Midlands Renault Specialists fit it for around £300. It's a 100% straight swap and it's transformed the car. Traction is massively improved in all areas. Thinking back now, I can see how a remapped one with that much torque would be a nightmare to get the power down. In the dry with Eagle F1's, it simply refuses to break traction on corner exit, no matter how stupid I am with the throttle. But with 342lb/ft you are still going to modulate that loud pedal My advice, buy an LSD box and never look back! But it's a big job (Renault say 11hrs!!) but find a good specialist like Mark@MRS and they will do it much cheaper, however if you think you might need a clutch any time soon, have that done at the same time to save the labour costs a 2nd time.
Great, thanks for that. It is probably the way I'll go; I did consider selling and buying a cup spec car, but I really like what I have and it is a good solid example. Money, money and more money! Hahaha!
