250 LSD not working

Discussion in 'Mechanical - Engine, Gearbox, Exhaust etc' started by jack250, Jan 6, 2018.

  1. Alright chaps. I jacked my car up today to check out the ARB bushes and checked the LSD also by spinning one wheel which means the other wheel should spin too. This doesn’t happen. Well not unless you spin it very very slowly. I take it the LDS is knackered?!

    Cheers

  2. After doing some research into this I’ve found out that the Megane doesn’t use a normal LSD. It uses a Torsen HLSD (‘h’ for helical) which works in a different way to a normal LSD. So the one wheel in the air test doesn’t work for this type off diff. There’s some interesting (and confusing) videos on YouTube for the Torsen LSD if you want to know how it works. Not a chance I could explain it!!

  3. It works by magic and witchcraft. As you can probably tell, I have no interest in how it works.

  4. It tries to balance out a torque differential across axles  but if you have zero torque on one side it'll do fuck all.

Which is it'd be terrible for rallying as if you get one wheel in the air, bye bye power

Terrible for track as well if you like hopping kerbs. I know for a fact mine would be a good .5 maybe even a full second a lap quicker at KH with a proper plated diff
