Hi guys been informed I will be moving to a different site for work and it means nearly 100 miles a day so looks like the rs 250 will need to be sold as running costs will be huge and the miles I will put in the car would be crazy. Only had it since June and loved every minute of it but I need to be practical and diesel it will be totally gutted.
Don't buy a shitter. 500 miles a week is way too many to do in an old shitter. Buy a nice diesel barge with auto box, something like an Audi.
I've done 1300 miles in mine the past month (been commuting from Cardiff to Bristol - 80 mile round trip). Luckily, I'll be working from home more as time goes on, but the miles do add up quickly. Going from a petrol to diesel you'd probably save about £1500 a year assuming you're doing 500 miles a week (I did some basic calcs based on 29 mpg in the Megane and 50mpg from a diesel with the current prices). I've had my 250 from new and seen the value of the 250's drop like all Renaults! I'll be keeping mine and piling the miles on until I find something I'd like to replace it with. 5 doors would be a must for me next as it's a pain getting the dog into the back of the 3 door. Just don't go paying too much or you'll find you've lost a few years worth of petrol cash just to change the car!
I had something similar after I bought my RS250, I've kept it for weekends and the odd trackday and bough a C4 1.6HDI for less than 2k. Since Jan I've saved over 1k on fuel costs (taking into account tax and insurance on the C4 also). For me to break even I'd have to keep the car two years (belts need doing next year which is an extra cost) but I didn't buy it purely on a financial decision. It has kept an extra 15k A-road and motorway miles off the RS and I appreciate the RS more when I do drive it.
