leaks, footwell water causing electric issues and how to combat it...?

I'm having a nightmare with the car guys. Sure it's been covered a million times but this is quite specific.

I basically try to start it and the electrics go mad. All the fuses seem to be clicking/talking to eachother and nothing else, car won't even crank. Now she did this last year and i thought it was the fuse box in the bay getting damp, checked it this year and it's not as bad. Went to the passenger side footwell today and it was literally full of water I'm talking like fully flooded. Some random wiring was submerged in the footwell and I'm not sure if this is related. Where as it doesn't look like it has a connection or use I don't want it to have affected the loom.

As the video shows it's trying to do something and all electrics are ok till you click start.

This is what it looked like after I cleaned it up.

Still won't start and I'm kind of at a loose end. All the fuses are ok, possibly the one inside the car (big yellow square one) has gone as it was clicking but I can't be sure.

I've got a Halfords Advanced car cover coming next week which will help protect her but there must be a way to sort the cars ability to remove water surely? Like cutting a door trim piece to ease flow? Feel like drilling a hole in the floor it's that annoying. Love the car but the footwell issues are a joke.

A friend on fb is saying the. Locked drain could have damaged a relay? I'm guessing that's the wiring he means?

  3. The problem you have is that the car is sitting for so long. A lot of the drains on cars won't clear unless the car is moving about, the ones in the doors sometimes don't completely clear until the doors are opened, etc. Couple this with the fact that with the car sitting all the crap will find its way into the drains. Not trying to say the Megane is faultless with its drains! Unless you can get the car inside, then the cover you have bought seems to be the next best choice [emoji846]

Of course, giving the car a good clean and checking all the drainage holes are as clear as possible. Then drying the interior as best you can before leaving it a while under the cover would be a good idea.

A relay is a small cube that is used in car electrics, normally located near fuse boxes and they are simply an electrically operated switch. They can be tested easily away from the car, google will turn up a guide. I would recommend getting all the electrics dry before trying anything, they don't much like being wet.

Thanks mate. That's what mark black just said too. Issue is I'd easily dry it out if I had power and could get the heating on haha! I'll get to it this week though.

    And drive it more!

  5. It'll be alright once you dry it out and keep it dry. They can be pretty resilient, but I would hold off trying to get it started until the electrics are all dry. Less chance of damage.
