will appreciate anyone who can shine some light on this problem... When I turn steering wheel left or right there is a metal sounding knock. Doesn't happen when going over bumps or uneven roads, only when turning. Checked the two bolts on steering rack and they are tight. Knocking coming from front drivers wheel area. If you watch or feel the spring you can see it shudder when it knocks. Would a broken spring do this? As the drivers spring looks shorter than the passenger's and the knocking sound sounds like a spring slipping, would this be the cause? Any other ideas?
When front end is jacked up it makes no noise at all when turning steering wheel full lock left to right. Anything I can do to check if it's cv joint?
Sounds like top mount. If the bearing is siezed it will make the spring shudder when it releases.. That's why it does it with weight on it and not when it's jacked up
Tried driving round in circle on full lock and not a sound, tried other way and not a sound whilst going round. Only knocked sometimes when changing from one direction to the other. When parked and turning full lock left to right it doesn't knock every time. It's weird, like it builds up then knocks?
Mine used to knock but only a very low speeds, I.e usually setting off from a junction and turning , it ended up being a new driveshaft as the cv joint had worn as the boot had popped off a while back. The knocking noise was more of a tapping which got faster as speed increased but then wouldn't be heard after 10mph or so.
OK so doesn't sound like cv joint. I'm going to go down the top mount bearing route. Where's the best place to buy them from and are they relatively easy to fit?
Lower hub bearing was my issues and gave exactly the symptoms you describe. Mark Black confirmed it when he reversed it into his garage and then changed them for me. Does the steering feel vague at all? Mine did. But mine where totally shot.
